Napier's Bones are a UK band that take the Classic Prog-Rock sound as a foundation and build upon it to create their own challenging and extended form of progressive rock music. Their focus is firmly on dramatic storytelling with subject matter capable of resonating with the listener today. Music that references the past but is very much of the here and now. Their primary musical influences include the great bands of some forty years ago but also span more recent trends in rock, electronica and modernist classical music. Every Napier's Bones track will take the listener on an emotional musical and lyrical journey, passing through dark and introspective territory en-route to resolution and deliverance. https://www.facebook.com/napiersbonesband Napier's Bones are: Gordon Midgley Nathan Jon TillettThis collection of songs will take the listener on an emotional musical and lyrical journey, passing through dark and introspective territory en-route to resolution and deliverance. released 03 July 2014 Music, Lyrics & Production © Gordon Midgley 2014 Vocals : Nathan Jon Tillett Artwork & Logo © Napier's Bones 2014 Edited by Svetonio - July 08 2014 at 18:31 |

Good discovery, not very folkish though, they sound like if King Crimson recorded ''In the court of the crimson king'' the past week!

Yep - this is a superb find indeed! Not sure where it would best fit though. Certainly plenty of mellotron here - and some pretty juicy guitar solos too...Take away the quite distinctive vocals and I could imagine these compositions as part of a vintage Barclay James Harvest album. We have those boys in Crossover - which is where I imagine this might eventually find its home too. Added to progfreak main database anyway: http://progfreak.com/Napier-s-Bones-159310.html. It's down to the evaluation teams now.

I listened to this yesterday and had to turn it off after a few minutes, sadly not that impressive, but from the little I did hear, I wouldn't call it folky at all.

If the Prog Folk Team find this stuff not enough folky, then the Neo Prog Team would take it to evaluate IMO. Edited by Svetonio - July 04 2014 at 07:17 |

Thought they sucked hugely but it certainly ticks many of the Prog boxes (including the war crimes against good taste and economy disclaimer)
Didn't hear many 'folk' elements though. more kinda pastoral, early
Crims, BJH, Moody Blues, Mellotrons R'Us, symph thang y'all. I'm
beginning to think that we are entering a time period in music where
artists such as Wobbler, Black Bonzo, Transatalantic, Steven Wilson, Big
Big Train, Flower Kings, Pond, Taproban, Areknames et al being avowedly
and referentially progressive in texture and influence, are
culpable in the artifice that imitating say, a French accent makes you
French (It doesn't) and we all should know that yeah/oui?

Which sub-genre you suggest? Just curious.

If forced to choose, probably Crossover but that seems like a rather fudged cop out |

What's the problem with this music exactly? IMO, it's a magnificent prog album, especially for 'tron lovers as me. Edited by Svetonio - July 04 2014 at 08:56 |

I loathe the singer and it sounds derivative of everything this band would probably profess to love in 70's Prog music i.e. like I said before , even though you might adore the French accent, adopting same doesn't make ya French.

^ one of the cornerstones of PA is that even irredeemably sh*te Prog has to be admitted i.e it's never a qualitative appraisal

"fairly amateurish"? LOL you must be kidding. You can love it (guitar work, or that way of singing, etc.) or not, but this debut is recorded in a professional manner without a question. Edited by Svetonio - July 04 2014 at 11:07 |

Yes I do. I have no problem with them being admitted, I'm just saying I didn't really like it.

Oh, sorry! Hey, what you meant exactly? I'm really curious, 'cause I'm listening to The Wistman Tales right now and thought that the album is actually a masterpiece by that contemporary band who do it very originally in ''retro' style.

It's hard to put into words, it's just that for me it has the feel of a demo tape. There's nothing particularly wrong with it, it's just that there are a lot of bands around who are so much better.
Try Camelias Garden for instance, they're in a different league imo. Then again, it's just my opinion.
