Thank you Kati and Jim for your kind words. I cannot apologize for taking the liberty to be exclusively positive, regardless of the site guidelines because we are all 'amateur' writers who are not paid for reviews. Normally a magazine like Progression or Expose would get a series of albums from artists for reviewing purposes and have their staff writers divide them up for publication , which would yield on occasion some odd/negative results. I would refuse to review a Math rock album because its not my expertise or area of pleasure. A vegetarian should not review a steakhouse. I am a symph/Neo/Eclectic/RPI/Psych-space fan and that is it. Within those guidelines, I choose what I like and review them, many are masterpieces to my ears. I often go back to those albums and never have I ever felt that I overrated them.
All in all, I have shown consistency and dedication to my 'narrow' field of expertise which has been honed on nearly 50 years of listening. I love this prog music thingy , really do.

Rule number one! Even if you dislike an album, do your homework, describe the music to the best you can. This should be no brainer, bands do deserve this. Reviewers have nothing to lose, the bands who are lucky to be reviewed have a lot to lose, at least treat them with the minimum respect they deserve.

I have to remind people on here that a band brought me here in 2010, year 2012 I contacted a few reviewers to review an album, I at the time was not forum active member at the time, even if I have been here since 2010. Something changed in 2012 and I started to interact more on here more. The band I am connected to released a new album 2014 but FOR THE RECORD this time I felt it was not right to request/ask anyone here to review the new album, I have not asked anyone on here to do this! I felt it's not appropriate because you all took me IN REGARDLESS IF YOU LIKE OR NOT THE BAND, P.A. has the nicest people here really, therefore I did not want to mix friendship and/or place others in an awkward position too.

Just to wrap this up - like I mentioned earlier, I never intended this little rating detour to point fingers or similarly hang people out to dry - least of all longstanding members who have done so much great work for this site. It was an honest question posed as a result of looking (perhaps) too close at the way members rate.
Anyway, I have always been the first to derail threads (often not mine to begin with), and seeing as we've been talking about Spiderman for so long now it seems as if this little meme is the only way out: ![]() To get back on track: We, Spidermen, only have until January 31 to come up with a list of the 10 albums we enjoyed the most from 2014....and I'm personally having a hard time going down from my list of 21, which is seriously cut as it is ![]() |

I chose my top ten based on what I was really addicted to this year. Some of the other favs could eventually slip in to the top ten if I had more time with them. Just like last year, I will probably find all kinds of good stuff after the fact, but here's my top 10 albums of 2014: 2. Liars - Mess 3. Seven Impale - City of the Sun 4. Giant Squid - Minoans 5. Swans - To Be Kind 6. Wolves in the Throne Room - Celestite 7. SORNE - House of Death: Book 1 8. Ishraqiyun - Perichoresis 9. Knifeworld - The Unravelling 10. Sinoia Caves - Beyond the Black Rainbow Other favs: - Goat - Commune - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tnu_O5P8P5I - Jack O' The Clock - Night Loops -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAkqSvYQyBc - Mogwai - Rave Tapes - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fvhUvgpV2x0 - Wild Beasts- Present Tense - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BG5t7XXhCPA - Moon Hooch - This Is Cave Music -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9sIclSoKsoY - Antemasque - s/t - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OabQkSOUWMo - St Vincent - s/t - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gD-jD5f84w - Watter - This World - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=luLlIhIRAGU - Univers Zero - Phosphorescent Dreams -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNm2qw6lrKQ - Alt-J - This is All Yours - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-mhgfXgwdls - The Skull Defekts - Dances in Dreams of of the Known Unknown -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxktNIL28e8 - My Brother The Wind - Once There Was A Time And A Place -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Sn8aqjoWuc - Hauschka - Abandoned City - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5R69Ojs62w - A Silver Mt Zion - f**k Off Get Free We Pour Light On Everything -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-6Rf7C8Kd8 - Hundred Waters - The Moon Rang Like A Bell -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4i_NbU-na78 - Guillaume Perret & The Electric Epic - Open Me -https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qWjdwTRPZo Good but somewhat disappointed with / didn't live up to its potential: ** update - Links Edited by bloodnarfer - January 13 2015 at 13:55 |

From Steve's thread, these are some of my favorite new discoveries of the year.
Complete with brief description and some samples. I tend to search for the smaller and under-the-radar type performers, which is why you'll find few if any big names on my list. But I think there's some good stuff here. Hope you find something you like. ![]() Over the Earth - catchy as hell crossover band Nomads of Hope - experimental folk, fans of Vashti Bunyan, Pererin, Samla Mammas Manna check it out Nucleus Torn - Swiss woodlands folk metal Mushroom Giant - muscular instrumental rock Earth - desert psych for wild misadventures Tacita Intesa - new RPI with impressive debut Secret Tales - fantasy, folk, heavy, female vocals, good D and D soundtrack Lowercase Noises - discovered them prior to this year but this is likely my album of the year pick Seris - tight metal with unique female vocals Mursic - theatrical symph metal with pop sensibilities S91 - Italian symph metal with female vocals Igayon - Israeli symph outfit with a friendly, intimate sound Dying Sun - brutal extreme metal squall, not for the weak of heart Kevin Geier - talented multi instrumentalist Superfluous Motor - cool instrumental fusion concept album Voice of Eye - rediscovered the trippy, experimental tribal ambient masterpiece called "Vespers" |

![]() Sorry Jim but with some people you truly get to new and unknown heights of obscurity. Most prog would be considered obscure by any mainstream music fan, but when folks like yourself and Phil chime in (i guess I am a little like that myself) there's just no telling where we wind up on the map! |
