Topic: New "Album" definition! Posted: August 15 2015 at 10:33 |
Hi. I have a question about "Studio Album" word. For better explain I give you 2 example: 1-Corvus Stone : Unscrewed (2015) 2- Edisons Children: Somewhere Between Here And There(2015)
These 2 albums categorized as Studio Albums in their page in PA but you can see many versions of old tracks in these albums track list! Even Live version of one song in new "Studio Album" track list. Now I really want to know what is PA definition for Studio Album? I don't have a negative point about this and please don't zoom on " ! " in my thread . Thanks

Hi 0666, In response to your question, the definition of a studio album you can find on Wikipedia, also copied here below for you:
Studio album
- A
studio album contains newly
written and recorded or previously unreleased or remixed material,
distinguishing itself from a compilation or reissue album of previously recorded material, or
live recording made at a performance venue.

Hmm, off the topic but why does PA allow reviews of singles? Especially songs that can be found on readily available albums?

Hi there! Good question. I am from Corvus Stone and it was all done in studios. Various studios but that has happened throughout history. Recorded here and there, mixed somehwere else etc. In our case, we have remixed some music from previous albums(Unlike many bands, we give it free to any buyer of the first 2) All done in studios and glad to say NOT mastered to be loud and unmusical. Call it old school studio Real even Bye for now Colin

I was aware that P.A. only add complete album releases, thus not singles? I see nothing wrong in reviewing recent remastered versions, as you probably are aware, many remastered versions differ from the original, inc. dynamic range etc. i.e. the 3 first albums from Led Zeppelin have now again been remastered and it would be silly to review the old ones if you instead happen to have the recent ones.

There are many Genesis singles reviews in PA Kati and, again, most are from albums that are available such as And Then There Were Three. And these are not remixes and/or remasters which alters the listening experience.

Hi. I don't agree with you. Edison's Children new album can categorize as Boxset and Compilation. You can find and listen. This is not about 1 or 2 tracks this is about over 50% of album! I recommend you to listen to this album. Thanks

Some would call that trolling... Especially since you fail to point out which tracks you are referring to. Listening to the album has nothing to do with that. The Wikipedia definition may not be exactly the one used by PA, but it is close enough. Has been for years.

Hi Angelo. You don't get my point. I don't change my opinion yet. some guys give me Link for "Studio Album" Definition ! I know about this definition but IMO this kind of albums don't be a "New Studio Album". Maybe you talk about Corvus Stone and my answer to one of them. I only said C.S new album have more new stuffs but this album still have many repeated tracks. This is very clear. You check and listen these albums then write your opinion about them. When you add one album as New Studio Album , this may effect to guys like me and spend money for having this new album. Never forget we talk about PA's effect on Prog fans . I hope you understand my opinion. Thanks

I agree with you that the new album of Edison's Children should be categorized in the compilation albums section.

[QUOTE=aliano] I agree with you that the new album of Edison's Children should be categorized in the compilation albums section
I don't see why at all. I listened to the new EC album tonight for the first time, having preordered it.
Pete and Eric were quite clear about this project. It was designed as an album including different mixes of previously released material, some new material, and mainly as a "bridging" album between wholly new material previously released, and to come. It stands fully as an Edison's Children studio album. It is not a compilation album, which would merely be re-released old material. This album has standalone versions of tracks. It is, by the way, extremely good.
I cannot comment on the new Corvus Stone release, but I will be buying it in the next week, or so. I know Colin well enough to state unutterably that he would not seek to deceive us by describing this work as a standalone studio work, and I will buy it on that basis.

Hello O666, let's set this straight. I'd like to avoid an endless discussion, which your style of discussing is bound to result in. If it is language related (which is very well possible) then please read very carefully before posting questions like you did, and certainly before responding to the answers you get. That could save a lot of time and confusion. So here goes...
You raise a question - asking for the definition of studio album used by PA. You get an answer (from a very fine lady, btw, not from 'some guys' ). So far so good. Then, you disagree with the definition, by contradicting yourself. In your initial post, you say you have no problem with the Edison Children album being defined as studio album, but after someone provides the definition you suddenly do have a problem with the album. That makes no sense to me. When I point that out to you, you tell me I don't understand your point, and tell me that I am talking about the other album (Corvus Stone). That's plain silly, I know what I write, and I know what I respond to: your remark about Edison's Children. Contradicting yourself and then telling me I don't understand to me means: end of discussion.
However, I do feel I have to give a final response to your closing remark, about how to spend your money and how PA and it's reviewers may influence that. Indeed, we do add albums in the place where we see fit, as we have done since 2004. And yes, some albums, according to the definition contain tracks that were also included in other albums by the same band - which is indeed the case with these two. Still, the amount of new material is considered sufficient to list them as studio albums, and remixes are obviously included for a reason (typically that reason being they are considered to be better than the previous releases of the same material).
I can only hope that positive reviews indeed get you to buy albums and support the bands that create them. If we include an album here and review it, that does not mean you don't have to think for yourself about whether or not you are going to spend money on it. As your initial post already indicates: it is clear from the description of these albums that not all material is new - whether or not that is reason to buy it or not to buy it is up to you, not to us. And in cases like the two you mentioned, you always have the option to only buy the new tracks from bandcamp or CDbaby. Your choice, not ours, and certainly not a reason to change the definition of what a studio album is.
I'll get me coat - I'm pretty sure this is all I have to say on this.

Wow this has received a lot of attention. Must be a good post of yours! "Corvus Stone Unscrewed" is, in my opinion a complete album and most of it rather new. Only 2 tracks and the bonus track are remixes with very little else done. All of those tracks have a great sound now and we felt we needed to do that for these 3. More than that, they are completely free to any buyer of a previous album, as it states, on every review and the album description. The re-visioned tracks are not remixes. They had a lot of work put in to them and a couple of those are a whole world apart from the versions already out there. They are also free to previous buyers. The new tracks are ... um... new! We loved making them and again, are completely free to any buyer of one of our albums. Then comes the actual sound on this album and maybe the real point. We never liked or fell in to the trap of compressing our albums to be loud but on this one, we pretty much skipped mastering all together. Consider it a test (Free to previous buyers), to see how many people actually care or notice that it is similar to the sound you got on vinyl(without the scratches). More real and ear friendly and strangely enough, more powerful when turned up, than modern compressed music. I would like to do everything this way in the future and hope that ALL bands will do the same. So.. to your point of it costing you money due to wrong info. That is impossible. If you buy this and never bought one before, you will pay but anyone knows that on bandcamp, you can listen to the whole thing first. If you bought one of our 80 minute albums before, you have almost no way of not knowing this one is free to you. Progarchives were kind enough to include the info about that on the album description. The reviews back it up. So does our website etc etc. Back in the day(UK), when an album cost the same as 1 day's wages and we had no bandcamp. Now, when an album costs less than 2 coffees and you can freely read all about the album on here, without buying a magazine and listen to the whole thing on bandcamp, it's pretty easy! We do our best and are nothing if not fair an thoughtful. We love what we do and very much hope you do too!

Thank you Steve! I must insist that you not pay if you already bought one tho. Ha! More importantly, I hope you like it. What I enjoyed this time, was the way we accidentally made an album and that can only happen when it's fun. Colin
