Thanks for the comments. Looks like 79 was a better musical year for most.

I'll take 2019, by far.

For 1979 I would choose...

Bill Bruford One of a Kind
UK Danger Money
Joe Jackson Look Sharp
Elvis Costello and the Attractions Armed Forces
Frank Zappa Joe's Garage Act's I, II and III

It's cool to know that maybe 5% on this site listen and realize that today's music is as good or better than 4 or 5 decades ago.

You state your position as the majority of members here don't listen to new music and of those that do only 5% realize the truth that today's music is better.

I call BS on this. Most members listen to plenty of new music, by our very nature we are always looking for new music. I'd posit that people find plenty of good new music, they just prefer the music from the past.

absolutely, most members know by heart the classics, and don't feel the urge to revisit  them. For ex, I'm not sure whether I pulled one out from the big 7 or 9, except that Crimson still being active, I surely heard some classic stuff in the recent live renditions.

Current ranking. Le Grand Sbam coming out next month is probably getting one of these spots, maybe the top.

1. The Pheumatic Transit - Chordae Tendinae
2. ni - Pantophobie
3. Consider The Source - You Are Literally A Metaphor
4. Helium Horse Fly - Hollowed
5. Tracteur - Tracteur

1979 was a pretty sad year for prog. Few of my favorites put out anything worthwhile. Even with the downturn this year has seen overall, it still beats 79 in my book. Only the top 2 get regular listens.

1. Bill Bruford - One of a Kind
2. Kitaro- Oasis
3. Frank Zappa - Joe's Garage
4. Steve Hackett - Spectral Mornings
5. Banco - Canto di Primavera

When I was a teen The Wall would have been on this list. But as the years passed, the sparkle has definitely worn off.

The new Gong LP is so good!!! Why aren't people talking about it?

Im guessing because of the lineup... the same reason people wont admit Drama is better than Going For the One

Does anyone in the UK know where you can pick up a reasonably priced CD of the Thieves Kitchen album? It seems to be cropping up on a lot of lists but Amazon (UK) are asking £26 (inc P&P) for it 'new'. Used I can get it for about £17 but still too expensive (might go for it if it was new)

2-Soen: Lotus,
3-Leprous: Pitfalls,
4-The Tea Club: If/When,
5-Borknagar: True North.

In 1979, i didn't know progressive music. I just discovered hard-rock/heavy-metal. Wink

I did the obvious thing and ordered direct from the band's website. Very easy to do and good price £11 + P&P
