Spot on, and an artist either appeals to you or it doesn't.

I do not doubt it. After being told for 50 years that what one does is called 'Progressive' and not having a better word for it, one does eventually give in and accepts the honors and the adoration.

They've had a Prog Magazine's Progressive Music Award show yearly since 2013. Big turnout. Heavyweights like Jon Anderson, Rick Wakeman, Steve Hackett, Ian Anderson, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford, Carl Palmer, etc. come to bask in the glory of their former progdom.... |

I'm friends with a lot of prog musicians on Facebook and I can assure you that they are happy and proud to be called that. Methinks you live in a bubble or something.

People today are too obsessed with labels and putting everything into boxes. It makes me uneasy, and it has a negative impact on diversity - especially when we get to these endless discussions about this or that band not being enough stylistically pure. Rush is Rush, and Pink Floyd is Pink Floyd. The most interesting music often comes from people who do not try to fit into a box.

I think the core issue here - if I may - is that Prog does not actually exist as a music current, or movement, or even as a remporary trend. Blues artists are happy and proud to be called that. Reggae artist, same. Same with Metal. But Prog? I am not aware of any artist or band that were/are happy with that label. Prog as a category only exists in the press and in the minds of some fans who by the way cannot even agree on what actually constitues Progressive Music. It' s really very funny. Might as well try to catch the wind, said Donovan. Was he Prog too?

I would hazard to say that's true of all my favorite prog bands, and when they were in their prime at that. I doubt if Floyd, Genesis, Yes, or Tull ever threw a tune away after thinking, "This doesn't sound prog enough." The NYC punk era duo Suicide, whom most assumed were intentionally being "difficult" and were "anti-pop," admitted that their goal was to write hits and get on the radio. They just didn't compromise their vision or their sound; while putting forth the best tunes that they could. I'm sure this was the goal of Yes, Genesis, Floyd, Tull, and most of the rest.

If Rush weren't prog then neither were Kansas, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, The Moody Blues, etc. The list could just keep going. Not all of their material was prog but the same could be said about a lot of bands considered prog.
