Sidney Poitier, Oscar-winning actor and Hollywood's first Black movie star, dies at 94 - CNN

Must confess, didn't realize he was still alive, but certainly a large loss to the hollywood community.

He showed that it wasn't about being a 'black actor', but rather being a great one, and being a brilliant human being.

I never post anything anywhere without doing more than basic research, often in depth.

RIP Sidney Poitier.

Last night, I watched the film for which Sidney Poitier won the Oscar for Best Actor: Lilies of the Field. An outstanding film.

I watched half of The Defiant Ones, made a few years earlier, which stars Poitier and Tony Curtis as two escaped felons, shackled together. I'll finish that tonight.

After that will likely be the '70s crime drama The Organization, where Poitier plays a detective trying to stop an influx of heroin into San Francisco.

I could not tell by your post, whether or not you have seen the movie 'In the Heat of the Night'. Many consider this to be one of Portier's best performance.  The movie won five Academy Awards including 'Best Picture' and 'Best Actor' for Rod Steiger.  As good as his performance was Portier was not nominated for an award.  If you haven't yet seen this, I'd like to suggest this gem.

^ The Organization is another police story with the same character from In the Heat of the night, Virgil Tibbs, so it's a sequel sort of.

Yes, it's the third film that features Poitier as Tibbs. The Organization was released in 1971.

ItHotN is one of the most oft-referenced Poitier films/performances, along with (usually) Guess Who's Coming to Dinner.

It's like mentioning Jaws or Dirty Harry. Everyone knows it. (But, yes, everyone should still watch it.)

I'd also throw in this classic movie to see, 'Stir Crazy' (1980).  Poitier did not act in this movie but he was the director.  It is one of the highest money grossing movies ever directed by a black man.  It also has (imo) one of the funniest scenes in a movie.

Thumbs Up I love Stir Crazy. I saw it at the drive-in when I was all of nine years old.
