Nice poll with many good albums. Ultimately it is between Ummagumma and Mercator Projected here with The Court of the Crimson King a strong third, then both Soft Machine albums, Renaissance, the rest of Pink Floyd, and Valentyne Suite. I give the vote to East of Eden expecting the others to score more easily.

I own all but one of the Moody Blues fifteen albums and my vote goes to Days of Future Passed. I'm still in search of the lost album (The Other Side of Life) as I gave it away to a charity shop a few years ago in a momentary lapse of reason. Unhappy

I love a lot of these. The first eight will always have a special place in my music loving heart:

King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King
East of Eden - Mercator Projected
Pink Floyd - A Saucerful of Secrets
Pink Floyd - The Piper at the Gates of Dawn
Jethro Tull - Stand Up
The Moody Blues - In Search of the Lost Chord
The Moody Blues - On the Threshold of a Dream
High Tide - Sea Shanties

These six are all quite wonderful as well:

Renaissance - Renaissance
Caravan - Caravan
Colosseum - Valentyne Suite
Genesis - From Genesis to Revelation
YES - Yes
Jethro Tull - This Was

If I voted I couldn't not vote for In the Court... so I don't know if I'll bother:)

I had to drop Soft Machine's two albums from the poll when I realised I'd forgotten to include the debut albums by Genesis and YES. Embarrassed

Me too.

I mean the vote, not the giving away of the album.

A lot of very good and original albums that I like and still listen too. Beside the classics from Pink Floyd and King Crimson, I love Mercator Projected, Arzachel and Sea Shanties.
From these years, I'd suggest The Pretty Things - S.F.Sorrow and Second Hand - Reality.

Hi,

It's really difficult to not vote for KC's excellent album, and the best screenshot of the late 60's in London that we could possibly EVER see or conceive ... though many can't deal with that history and instead think of the incredible variety of things as "progressive".

I think that as much as KC's album was a groundbreaking moment in "rock music", it is difficult to say that Jimi did not, and Janis did not, and Grace did not. But of all those albums the one that rocked the radio really well, and strongly, was the Moody Blues album! Jethro Tull did not break into radio until the FM stations came along (more or less!) and PF was not a "player" in radio until late 1971 and early 1972, though (now) we look at the albums with a completely different sentiment that was not apparent at the time.

Renaissance's album is interesting, but the original Renaissance coming out of the Yardbirds was much more deserving of a touch and attention, except that no one in AM radio knew who anyone was, and it wasn't the Yardbirds and their manager's desire to see them become a hard core The Turtles (see the recent interview with Jimmi P.) ... which likely blew out any support for anyone that came from the Yardbirds by a money making machine who could not see the future!

The only sad thing about this poll ... no INCREDIBLE STRING BAND ... and that is so very sad for me. Their work for the duration of many albums was so superior to many bands, and it was not a rinse and repeat affair as most bands listed became. They are the one band that was at Woodstock, when everyone was asleep, sadly enough ... and to this day, the fans are also asleep! Big smile

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

I like S.F. Sorrow too, but for me, The Sweet Pretty Things is the prettiest one of all. Big smile

Hard to not vote for ItCotCK, but that Renaissance debut--an album that I'd only heard for the first time in the past year--is one heck of an album!

It's almost impossible to choose a favorite from this list. I voted for Stand Up, the first prog album I ever had, so it has a very special and personal meaning to me.

I would have to agree with Psych Paul about the Moodys' DAYS OF FUTURE...  hearing it played on the college FM station KPPC from Pasadena while hanging in the Green Room of the Drama Department at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, California was a Sonic Salon, pure Bohemian experience for me.  it motivated me to get into professional Freeform Radio in Orange County, KTBT FM in Garden Grove.  I created my import show BRITISH UNDERGROUND & got it on the air, Spring 1968, by pretending I was English.  it was the forerunner to SPACE PIRATE RADIO.

having said this, I voted for Pink Floyd, MORE because I think it could use some much-needed love.  after all, David Gilmour at one time wanted it removed from their catalog.

mondo love to you all, dear friends.  cheers!

I don't know why I forgot to include it. Pure magic.  The light classical music was a little hard for me to digest at first, and Lunch Break is still kind of goofy. But I've softened over the years. It does have the feel of a vintage "visit our lovely holiday resort"/word from our sponsors-feel, but even that has its charm.
