Topic: Are Progarchives.com’s mp3s legal? Posted: September 17 2005 at 19:04 |
Hello, everyone.
I think this site is awesome! I've already learned a lot from it, and
I'm highly interested in checking out more facets of Progressive music.
I have a question: are the mp3s on Progarchives.com legal and legitimate? I don't mean to be tense, but I would like to know.
If anyone could assist me, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you and rock on,

The general rule is that the mp3s are removed if the artist in question
contacts us requesting for them to be taken off. However, some artists
who've become aware of them have in fact expressed that they see no
problem in the mp3s being available as they serve as a good "advert"
for their work. If you feel insecure downloading them then don't, but
really they're just harmless samples that are helping to spread an
appreciation and understanding of prog to an ever wider audience.

I can strangle a canary in a tin can and it would be really original, but that wouldn't save it from sounding like utter sh*t.

Simple. Just go to the bio page of the band you are interested in, scroll down a bit, and check out the mp3s. To download one, right click it and choose save target as.

Yeah, those lawyers out for royalties for every free song you download. Come on, now! It's purely for the buy-making decisions. Ok, I admit, I do happen to download full albums for free, but that's only in very rare circumstances (like I can't find an album cuz it's out of print). Thank you Progarchives.com for free mp3s. I wouldn't of even known artists like Gentle Giant and Camel. Three cheers for free music!

I think those wonderful Gentle Giant mp3s suits me a lot, since I've always been skeptical of their cd length...

I asked this question - originally on the Q. T. - and from the answer I got decided to do the following: I download a song and listen to it three times (four, if my wife doesn't hear it in one of the three). I then delete it. And never burn it on to a CD. This is just my rule for me.

Legal or not...
I have said this before, I download music like no one's business, but I
always spend the absolute maximum my budget will allow on support of
great artists (and those not so great). I have spent so much $$$ on
artists I would NEVER have heard had it not been for my exposure to
them through legal (and otherwise )
downloads. The internet has been the single greatest tool in the
advancement of progressive music, as it allows us instant access to
music from around the world we never would have heard, as our genre of
choice rarely receives radio play.
Example: I first discovered Porcupine Tree by illegally downloading
several songs on Napster years back. Since then, I have bought every
album by them I can get my hands on as well as albums by No-Man,
Blackfield, and IEM. Throw in the cost of seeing them four times (For
one show, I bought two "extra" tix and gave them to friends, just to
expose them), and Blackfield once. Add in T-shirts and I'd say that
three simple "illegal" downloads have served the financial interest of
the artist quite well. But maybe I am the exception, I'll probably end
up in jail anyway...

OK, take this. I live in a tiny hamlet in rural Australia, about 360 km from the nearest "Big Smoke". Just walk into a record store and search endlessly on sample tracks provided. There'll be not one Prog tune! Even at the stores I may not find what I am looking for - that is presuming that I know what it is...! MP3s are a great help in deciding if I may have some interest in that artist, although disappointment is not that rare, after mail-ordering an album on recommendation.
I have no problem with downloading the odd tune that - with my Internet speed of 21600 on a good day - takes me an average of 80 minutes!
I see MP3s as a valid marketing tool and the promoters couldn't agree more in their right minds. Legal, or not, we all win!

I think you're allowed to make 30 second samples. Any longer without the consent of the artist is illegal.
