Topic: I give up! Posted: May 15 2006 at 17:34 |
I officially give up on Yes. I've listened to CTTE at least 12 times, and I don't like it! I'm never going to like it; I hate it more and more every listen. Yes, the first 4 minutes of it are good, the last few minutes of CTTE are good, and parts of And You And I and Siberian Khatru are good, but the rest of it seems to me to be a whole lot of boring nothing. And I'm sorry, but the lyrics make me SO ANGRY! Use complete sentences, damn you! They're so incredibly bad, and I can't ignore them, no matter how hard I try. So I'm no longer going to waste my time putting myself through torment. Relayer=Yes' best album, and perhaps only good album. *ducks*
I also officially give up on King Crimson. I don't like ITCOTCK; it's not that good; and like CTTE, I will never understand why it is so universally heralded as such an amazing album. Simply because it's first does not make it the best, or even good. (although Schizoid Man is good.) I've even listened to what is supposed to be their best song, LTIA pt. 2. All I hear is several power cords repeated on a guitar many, many times; and some cool violin playing, except that Cross is playing the same thing over and over again. And I listened to the song Red, which is also too repetive. But I like The Night Watch.
It's weird that I find Yes boring since I love all of pre-Wall Pink Floyd, which a lot of people here seem to find boring. I'm not a big fan of Jon's voice, and I can't listen to Rush because of Geddy (although overall I think I would rate them higher than Yes); but I just bought H to He, Who Am the Only One.
Any famous prog bands that you should like, but simply don't?
BTW, does anyone want a perfect condition copy of CTTE and/or ITCOTCK? :-)

Like who you want to like and dislike who you want to dislike. Afterall, it is yourself who has to be happy with the music. Personally, Yes isn't my cup of tea either, although I have grown to like them a little.

Yeah, that happens sometimes. Don't fret, there are plenty of other prog bands around.
Marillion's about the only one of the bigger bands that I think is horrible.

Surely if you really disliked those albums, they wouldn't still be in "perfect condition" ?!
I'm gonna duck now....

I will Ghandi! My copy of ItCotCK is a copy and I don't have CttE!
I agree about Red, that isn't that great a track, in my opinion, it kind of ruins the whole of the album for me. The Night Watch is a great tune and Starless and Bible Black as an album is great.
I don't have any Yes though.

I had a big problem with Yes for many years until I got to see them live in 1996 ,then I started liking them.I'm completely baffled though as to why anyone would not like ITCOTCK.The only bad thing is the drum sound but everything else is ''WOW'' for me.

1st four minutes are good? - the rest is better- far better
I agree about Relayer- IMO their best also. EASY.
It's OK- I don't like KC either- we are not supposed to like every band- would be boring if everyone liked everything.
Genesis is another band Im iffy on- I like SEBTP- but I find Nursery Crime and Foxtrot boring as hell-
VDGG is also very, very boring in my opinion. Its ok though- some dudes don't like Rush, and they are my fav- that's how it goes
and oh yeah- Gentle Giant- well, I'd better not go there......

Well, it's all a matter of taste, I guess I remember I loved CTTE from the first listen, greatest album ever. Same with ITCOTCK, though it took a bit longer to grow on me. Don't give up on KC though, ITCHYCOCK isn't the best album, try Red, if you don't like it(which is hard to do, really ) then give up. Personally I am yet to hear a prog band that I didn't like for any reason other than its poppiness Do you like Italian prog BTW?

Of the major prog bands who I have listened to extensively: King Crimson do nothing for me as a whole. Yes, I like odd tracks, who wouldnt with a band with such an extensive catalogue. However because they are part of the Classic Prog scene I always feel slightly guilty for not appreciating them. ELP are a slightly different case for me as initially I liked them but now I have grown up I find them almost unbearably pretentious. I would be embarrassed if a friend walked in on me whilst I was listening to one of their albums!! Jethro Tull - too " Hey Nonnie Nonnie" for me. I just cannot find one redeeming feature.Their music seems to go nowhere, slowly. Gentle Giant - what the heck are they supposed to be? Those bizarre vocal harmonies, and songs about nothing I can understand. No,I have tried and failed to "get" these guys. VDGG - eek! A combination of all the above. Hammill's vocal delivery drives me potty, the music is ponderous and dreary. Too "old-fashioned".....?

Oh well, Yes aren't for everyone. They're my personal favorite, but it's only a matter of taste. I agree that the first and last few minutes of the title track are the best parts of CTTE, (aside from the pipe organ/Minimoog/Hammond solo ) but the rest of the album is also exceptional as far as I'm concerned. However, if there were one song over five minutes in length included on any Yes album from TYA to GFTO that I find slightly lacklustre, it'd be Siberian Khatru, so that brings CTTE down a bit. I too find Relayer to be a far stronger album, but I like TFTO better still.
That being said, I'd be curious to know what, aside from Jon's rediculously cryptic and grammatically incorrect lyrics, you dislike about Yes so much as to proclaim them to be "so incredibly bad" before legions of ardent Yes fans.

Nice to see you listening to a Welsh band Snowie!
I've not come to dislike any bands yet really. I've not heard enough Yes, Genesis or GG to comment.
I didn't really like Echolyn though and apparently they're GG like...
