Topic: The album that dissapointed you heavily Posted: June 08 2006 at 07:36 |
What's the name of the album that have you dissapointed most or betrayed (so to say) your expectations. Let's say that you'd rated it with one (*) or two stars (**) in your review.
For example, to me one of such is 'Discipline' by King Crimson. Though the best of 3 (Discipline, Beat, Three of a perfect Pair) I would rate it with ** stars; I remember that at the time before first listening , I've expected to hear 69-74 Crimson tune and dissapointment was really huge and stayed to nowadays.

Spock's Beard - Beware of Darkness
As I've recounted before; I was poor, I could afford one CD, I had read
masses of rave reviews of this band online, and I was just horrified.
Now, had people actually mentioned their AOR streak, I might not have
made that purchase, and maybe later come to terms with them on more
realistic terms.
Marillion - Misplaced Chidhood
I was a huge Marillion fan back in the day. This album came out while
we were interrailing in the UK, me and my biggest Prog buddy at the
time. We carried it around for a few days, reading the lyrics and
studying the sleeve before finally getting the chance to listen to it at his cousin's house.
I remember the both of us just looking at each other in confusion; was
this really the band we had hitchhiked to Copenhagen to see? The one we
hade queued for a week to get Stockholm tickets? The one we had
interviewed all members of (not just Fish)? It was just baffling.
That one time through was all we had for a week or so (a week in which
we saw IQ live four times), and we would discuss it every now and
again, agreeing that surely we would find more than some segued Pop
tunes in those two epics once we got back home. Sadly, we never did.
Talvin Singh - Ha
Talvin Singh's first "proper" album OK is still one of the great 90's
Electronica albums with fantastic Indian strings, som really complex
structures and fun and adventurous tunes (Prog, if you ask me). So, for
the follow-up to be just lacklustre and repetitive, with overtones of
House (gah!) was a terrible disappointment. I pull it out every now and
again thinking it must be better than I remember it. Nope.

Have you ever heard "The Light"? I own the first two SB albums and I vastly
prefer the second to the first. In fact, "The Light" is my choice
for the album that disappointed me the most, I tried and tried but
simply could not get into it (although the second track is at least
passable). I would definitely not rank this album above 2 stars.
I'm at a real hesitation point about both Spock's Beard and The Flower
Kings...some of the music is quite good, but I'm starting to wonder if
accumulating the entire catalogs is the wrong use of monetary and
listening investment, especially when there are a lot of quality new
bands as well as old ones which I'm still discovering.

Dream Theater - Octovarium (didn't know DT before this, it was OK but didn't really light my fire);
Spocks Beard - The Light -recommended to me as I like "classic" symphonic like Yes etc - but this was a mish-mash of styles, most disappointing
Steve Vai - Passion and Warfare - not really prog; I knew Vai's work from his Zappa days but despite the man's technical ability, musically it didn't do anything for me.

Besides "Solitary Shell" I was also dissapointed with this album, it just seemed to be going nowhere.
Also Grace Under Pressure-Rush and Kansas-Audiovisions.

The Final Cut. We even got an expression in Dutch: "Finaal kut!", which means 'definitely crap'.

Well, there are lots that failed to come up to scratch.......one notable one, not because everyone else rated it highly (they didn't), but because of my own self-constructed expectation........Greg Lake's "solo" album (with Gary Moore)............I figured together they ought to produce something different.........but it's very disappointing, inferior even to many of Moore's solo works.........just semi-heavy rock, played at half intensity........

Camel - Rain dances. This album was like ten steps back from the incredible Moonmadness. It broke my heart Mago de Oz - Gaia II. Another dissapointment. They turned more commercial album after album, but strangely, they become more porggier album after album. Some songs from the first disc and some from the second disc (+ the epic wich its a must listen) are the ones worth saving.

Djam Karet live at the orion, I listened to it a few times but found I didn`t get into it, a very arty farty CD I think (talented band though) I kept thinking that if I am going to listen to this type of stuff I`ll stick with King Crimson, they do arty farty best. So in the end I didn`t enjoy Djam Karet it was weird? I should have liked them but I didn`t. Another band I am having trouble getting into is After Crying . I like some aspects of the bootleg symphony (in places its warm and lush) but once again a little over the top on the arty farty scale of things

Yeah, how could I forget: Yes - Open Your Eyes
While I thought the Keys tunes weren't all that great and horribly
produced, at least it seemed to point to an actual interest in
stretching out to long-form again and maybe since those songs had a bit
of a demo feel, a properly produced, arranged and recorded album from a
somewhat revitalised Yes might have something worth listening to.
Wow, was I ever wrong.

On the progressive side of things. There have been a few albums that have let me down. I think the most out of these would have to be.
Utopia - Todd Rundgren's Utopia
After hereing the streamed track here on the archives, "Utopia Theme" quickly became one of those song I could listen to on repeat. In the course of time, I stubbled across the album in my local store. I thought I was in heaven... I could hardly wait to get home to put the disc in my player. Putting it on, the farmiliar sound of the first song hit me like it never had before. Now coming up to the unknown tracks of the album. I found the middle tracks just seemed filler till the epic of the album. So in anticipation I wait. But the last track did nothing for me as well, it just seemed to wonder with no real direction.
Time and time again I try to relisten to this album think I have missed something but everytime fails to provoke positive emotions. So I guess that is my disappointment in progressive rock.

Lately: Rush - Vapor Trails - so many people hailed this as a "return to form". I just don't hear it.
and primarily: Queensryche's Operation Mindcrime II. It's a crime, alright.
