Ha, ha! Only kidding of course...gulp. Why aren't you laughing?

Seriously now, I'd be a fool to not enjoy sections of this. But why is this so highly regarded? I want to know! To me, it seemed like a bit of a bore; sort of a rehashing of some ideas from The (superior) Yes Album; I swear, I hear Yours Is No Disgrace in the Siberian Khatru, A Venture in Close to the Edge and Your Move in And You and I. But maybe that's just me...

Opines?

I think there are enough reviews on the site to tell you why people like this album so much.

Crap there's lotsa reviews...took my ole PC a bit to load 'em.

Er, they mostly say that the songs are "good," "great," or "masterpieces." Oh, and they say that they are complex and alternate betwen loud and quiet. Judging a nineteen minute song on how loud it is? Sounds like something I'd do...

Seriously - how often have you played it? It took me at least ten spins before I started to recognise it for the masterpiece it is.

...I dunno. I had it a few days, so maybe five or six times? I'll keep at it till the batteries in my CD player die.

If I could just point something out, this is at least the third thread I've seen in recent times about not liking CttE. Look at this one, for instance:

http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=26780&KW=CTTE

That said, I've got to admit I don't understand the point of these discussions. I don't like "Foxtrot", for instance, but I wouldn't dream to open a thread about it. Perhaps it's just me, though...

Nah, I'm probably being a butt here. It's just that this one is always jockeying with Selling England for number one, and I didn't realize that when I got them both to listen to in weekly succession, and Selling just seemed so much, er, better from the get go than Close. In my (frequently) humbled opinion, of course.

Should this be closed? You're the mod...

well, all I can say, is that I sense danger within this subject; just to recal, people loving Ctte don't usual stand people hating Ctte; and the accent on "suck" rather than "dislike" is a leak gas, waiting just for the match...Stern Smile

Also, I think I've had enough of "who loves/hates Ctte" for one life.

Er, that might have been part of my goal. Heh.

There will also be reviews from people who view the album as you do, nothing spectacular, or worse yet hate it.

No, I don't see much point in this either.  Sometimes in an existing thread about a band or album I'll express my dislike, but even rarely then.

If part of the reason you're asking about the "masterpiece" status of Close to the Edge is because it's rated #1 on the site, be aware that a lot of "foul play", viz. rating monkey-business from fanboys have skewed things so badly that one shouldn't take that list (at least the top of it) seriously at all.  Suffice it to say that it's a consensus masterpiece on this site, but not without its detractors, as you will find on pretty much every album.

At least, someone else who also doesn't like Foxtrot...

We don't have to open a thread, but there's always an option to join the already existing one... Wink

Seriously, I would like to know why people like or (much more actual to me) dislike it. I tried it at least ten times, and still I fail to find there any interest (and that with other Genesis (Gabriel era) albums which I find quite interesting...)

I don't dislike it, I guess, but I fail to see what the big deal is.  For me Selling England is far superior.  But since I've only recently started to listen to Genesis in earnest, perhaps I'm not the best qualified to make an assessment.

The fisr time I heard it I knew it was something special...and then again, I had never heard a 20 minutes song before...this was my first...the best introduction I think
"You want me to play what, Robert?"

See my response in the other thread on this topic, aswell as my response in the "Are Pink Floyd Boring" (or something like that) poll. You might also want to look up a poll I made a while ago, CttE vs The Yes Album, as it also deals with this issue.
