Attahk and Udu Wudu are very accessible, but someone who can get into their more intense stuff should definitely check out MDK or 1001 Degrees Centigrade

i started with Khontarkosz and havent looked back since.
Mdk can be a little overwhelming/intimidating at first because of the chanting. its an awesome album dont get me wrong but it can scare people as much as attract them. Khontarkosz is much more subdued in that respect, but it is INTENSE jazz fusion. dark with one of the best buildups ever. second favorite magma album. |

I'd like to try them out sometime, they seem really interesting. If only their albums weren't $40 a pop on Amazon....

I just did a quick check and they are not all $40 - there are some for less than $10. I'd compare those albums with the ratings on the Magma band page and choose one of those that has a >4* rating to start with.

Most of Magma's catalogue is available on emusic, which is a good way to try before you buy (the downloads are very cheap and good quality).

My fav is Udu Wudu. Weird (De Futura) and gentle (the title track) at the very same time.

This, if you're looking for something different. Try their debut if you're looking for something more traditionally jazzy. Though if you liked that sample you're probably better off starting with that album and MDK. |

Udu Wudu is the most accessible but I find it's their best one, it has this weird atmosphere that I love and bass parts are great!!
MDK, Wurdah Itah, Köhntarkösz are classic prog albums... |

Everything except Merci is excellent. The fact that most here are recommending the album they started with goes to show that it doesn't really matter where you hop in. For me it was 1001 ° Centigrades, which is probably the least "weird" (relatively of course

I agree with this. I started with MDK and was initially put off by the excessive vocals, then I eventually got Kontarkosz and enjoyed it much more.. Now I love MDK (and most of their other albums), but I wouldn't suggest it as your very first Magma album. That's just me though, some others have had better luck. |

Of the studio albums, I like the debut (Kobaia) the most. Fabulous album, and very jazzy, as is the follow-up (this is one I return to so much, and took me a while to fully appreciate). I wouldn't recommend MDK now, even though it's the album that really got me into Magma. I just think that the live versions are so much better (though it might have helped that I started with the studio version). Retrospectiw 1-2 is essential, has a much more enjoyable version of "MDK" on it, for me, and also has the wonderful "Theusz Hamtaahk". And Live/ Hhai is a great one to get you going -- very good. Eventually, you might find all of their albums essential. Even the much maligned Merci is vindicated, imo, primarily thanks to "Elephas Levi". Generally, I think Magma best live, and they have a number of very good live albums

Watching while most appreciating a sunset in the moment need not diminish all the glorious sunsets I have observed before. It can be much like that with music for me.
