oh yeah.. for sure...that did make a big difference in the overall sound of them.. but now that you mention it... hell did either have Nick Mason. LOL

I remember reading Gilmour had to go with session drummers when recording AMLOR because Mason had forgotten how to drum... ahh.. I could drum for damn Pink Floyd LOL  And they call it a Floyd album.. pfff.... it was a Gilmour solo album with a bunch of hired hands.

I think it's got some amazing tracks on it. Not a masterpiece but not remotely as bad as some later KC albums with that useless wart from Talking Heads on them. Belew is an awful vocalist and his guitar playing isn't my cup of tea, like Fripp's. Skilful sure, bit it sounds awful.

I had the pleasure of seeing Belew play about a month ago. That dude STILL plays with the passion of a twenty-something musician. Great show.

One thing TFC and AMLOR don't have is Wright's input, and I think the lack of it affected both album... and not in a good way.


Indeed, Wright was instrumental for the sound of the band. Without him, a great part of what makes the band special is lost.

one could put it down to bitterness..if he wasn't so damn right about it LOL  Glimour was never a particularly gifted songwriter. Roger was (post Syd) the creative center of the group. Remove him and what do have ... an album in which RATT trashes anything and everything off of.


Sure, he's basically right but AMLOR is much better than the Final Cut and all solo Waters other than Amused to Death imo. Waters was the center of gravity in the band but the main problem was that Floyd were long since out of ideas by that point. Also, I never had the impression that Waters was ever the main musical force in the band.

 
I agree.....I never saw Waters as the 'musical force' behind Floyd as much as the lyricist and idea man and his bass playing and singing  was always average imho...and Waters took his idea for Amused To Death (arguably his 'best' solo LP) from Neil Postman's book Amusing Ourselves To Death.
 


I also don't feel like Waters really the most important creative center of the band until The Wall. At their best, they had input from all 3 (don't know how much Mason could have contributed, but on the writing credits he seldom gets mentioned). Dark Side is mostly a collaborative effort... with a few songs credited only to Waters... but the main reason he rarely is left out of the credits is that by this time he was the only one writing lyrics (and indeed he was the best choice for that), so that even if a song was composed without his input, once the lyrics are added he must be credited anyway. Even Animals, which is suposed to be where Waters began to take too much control, has Dogs, by far the longest (and for me the best) song of the album, and that one, as far as I understand, is mainly a Gilmour song, except, once again, for the lyrics.

The key word is synergy. A successful work collective, be it a band or indeed any other creative team, the result is always greater than the sum of its components. 

Waters in many ways resembles Lennon. The Beatles as we know them could never have happened without Lennon. In the Beatles context, Lennon was an undisputed genius. On his own, he obviously didn't stop being as talented and sharp-witted, but his post-1970 music is, arguably, mostly for fans and activists. 

McCartney was able to ride on the crest of the Beatles' residual elan into the Band On The Run.

It's noticeable that Mason doesn't play much (at all?) there... and yeah he was no Neil Peart LOL

If you see it as a Gilmour solo album it's not bad, much better than About Face IMO

yeah Raff and I saw him a couple of years ago.. some local coffee bar that doubles as a nightclub.  Stood like a couple feet from him and though my ears bleed from the shear volume.. it a was frickin fantastic show Clap
