This is pretty much how I feel too.  No matter how many times I've heard it there's nothing quite like an hour with the cans on and your eyes closed listening to the magical Garden of Dreams.  The second disc is a real let down in comparison (there's still good stuff on there, don't get me wrong) but this album would be a 5 star jobby for me even if disc 2 was Roine (or Salazar)  fiddling about on the harmonica or trying to learn to play the didgeridoo.  Disc 1 is just sooooo good.

Yeah, there IS good stuff on CD2, though I think there is also some of their weakest stuff as well.  Even the good stuff is sort of middling I would say, though the first track is classic Flower Kings and the Psychedelic Postcard / Hudson River Sirens Call sequence is excellent.  I also like the Afterlife coda, how it wraps up the album so well, but by that point I'm usually worn out from the sheer length of the thing.  I've tried to just listen to CD2 by itself, but it's still a pretty weak disk, even on it's own.  I think I still gave the album 4 stars in my review, with CD1 being 5 stars and CD2 being something around 2.5 or 3 stars.  Had CD1 been released by itself as an album, it would have 5 stars for sure, and be their masterwork.  As it is, only Unfold got a 5 star from me (but I try to be very sparing with my 5 stars.......though probably most of my 4 star FK reviews could easily be bumped up to 5 stars).

I actually think that TFK should have just released an album called Garden of Dreams with just that track in it and then a few months later, released a second CD with the stuff on CD2. The other stuff would then be recognised for how good it actually is.

It would all have been far more easy to digest that way Wink

I agree, Flower Power should have been disc 1 only. Disc 2 should have been it's own album, called "Deaf Numb and Blind"

I only became interested in them quite recently myself (in the last year or two)
there was a track on free sample CD from insideOut that came with Classic rock magazine (Silent Inferno) but it was Roine Stolt's work on transatlantic that really got me interested.

If you just want to dip your toe in, you can generally pick up 'Meet the flower Kings' pretty cheaply (<£6 from 7 digital ). It's a live collection of their longer songs but is very good (IMO).

Golden,

They're one of my favorites, a lot of good stuff out there.  Wjo makes a good point about the Meet the Flower Kings CD / DVD, not a bad place to start and available to watch from Netflix if you subscribe.

I don't know, I could easily live without CD2.  It's easily their weakest set of material, only surpassed (in weakness) by Adam & Eve.  At least, that's my view, so it must be right Wink

I actually enjoy CD2 of Flower Power a lot. Deaf, Numb, and Blind is one of my favorites.
Just give it all an hour by the concrete lake.

Well, as I said before, there is good material, with that song being a classic.  I don't think it's bad, I just think it's overall pretty weak by FK standards.  Which, of course, would make it a masterpiece by many other bands standards LOL

Spock's Beard need your votes in the prog world cup poll as they are neck and neck with GY!BE.

I get a bit fed up with these fans of "Post Rock" (whatever that means) sneering at Symphonic Prog.

Keep an eye out for The Flower Kings in this competetion coz they are soon to be up against Radiohead and GY!BE if they get through the rounds. Can't see them beating Porcupine Tree in the semis though.

Cheers

???

Post Rock is a way more valid and established name genre than Symphonic Prog.

Hmm, interesting.  I am a huge fan of Symphonic Rock.  But I voted for GY!BE in that poll.  (I'd also pick them over TFK; sorry!)

It's okay to not Post-Rock or Symphonic Prog.
But to ask people to vote for a certain band just because you dislike them is kinda silly.

Also just to help you out with learning what post-rock is lemme give you a link..

You might find something you like!

I have no issue with post rock, aside from the fact I find GY!BE intolerably boring.  I haven't tried anything else, since I understand that they are more or less the creators of the genre and by many accounts it's finest purveyors.  Still, I'm always open to trying new music.

I would vote just about any sympho band over GY!BE......completely because of taste, nothing more.

Thanks for the link.  Now I know a lot more about the genre than I did before.  I didn't realize GY!BE were latecomers to the post rock scene.

A post-rock band i always talk about is Youth Pictures of Florence Henderson.
Their self-entitled album is brilliant and is basically untouched on this website!
Highly suggest them.

Here's a song from the album and a PA link to the album as well.

This album has wonderful vocals too by the way.

Check these:

(not totally post-rock)

Not sure how much you'll like any of these, but you could try if you want to seriously give it a chance. By the way, I'm not a big post rock fan, just like listening to specific stuff from it.
