Wooten can play the piano, cello and sing. Chris Squire can play keyboards and sing. One more thing- if anyone wants to hear mindblowing bass work from Wooten, check out his rendition of "Cherokee." Holy smokes. |

Levin is nice, my choice. Normally, it would be Pastorius
BTW, I'm happy to see Myung so low , nothing against the guy, I just always considered him pretty mediocre and overrated. Sorry for those who likes him, just my poor perception |

+1 Maybe not in this poll, but I've noticed it before. Just open a Dream Theater topic to die stoned. Some days ago I opened a post about neo prog (now I know this is a "tabu" topic), and well, the firsts replays was not very nice... But lately the conversation turned very interesting |

Ohh poop, problem is, you pitted guys that are mainstream bassists in prog circles (like Chris Squier and Geddy) against guys in genres people are divided on.
A lot of people love Geddy and Chris, that's cool, cos I do too. I guess I like modern players more. I'll give it to Dan Brigs. His playing compliments the band so well. His solo on Viridian... so tasteful, great note choice. Edited by HughesJB4 - October 15 2008 at 22:58 |

As most people, I love Squire's signature tone, so he got my vote. I dislike Geddy Lee's bass a lot for some reason...
Carl Palmer should've been in here, you know, just for being a member of ELP. |

There´s a brand new video clip of German prog rock legend Hellmut Hattler.
The real fun starts at 3:07

well., here are a few examples of Hattler playing:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SkYFRnsd0n4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uljBW62cTK8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DmD9dV9G4Q http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNobmRa3HBw but honestly: Hattler has been a top number in bass playing for almost 40 years now; not having heard of him borders on total ignorance on the subject Edited by BaldJean - October 16 2008 at 02:34 |

Chris Squier, Lee and Tony Levin are no doubt among the best bassists ever, but i'm voting with Myung. Why, because i considered to be one of the best musicians ever. He really knows to handle the bass so well that everytime i saw him playing or hearing what he does with the instrument knock out my socks. Excellent bass player.

Being a bass fetishist, let me be a complete ass and state, for the record: "All prog bass players are great" . There , I said it, I feel better already.

Chris Squire is the best, but I also love Tony Levin and Victor Wooten for their experimental works. These guy have done a lot to diversify the way to play bass guitars.

How is Cliff Williams from AC/DC not an option. Surely the best bassist ever..................................possibly.
By the way, I voted Squire. Don't know some of these, but Squire is my choice from those I know.

Where the hell is Thierry Zaboitzeff!!? Just kidding, but he is my favorite bassist (outside jazz) lately.
What other band than Art Zoyd has a bassist that makes you forget they don't have a drummer? He plays cello brilliantly too, and grunts, roars, growls, screams, & whispers much better than Geddy Lee sings.
I know him, and I would care a lot more about his basspalying if I cared more about Kraan. Same thing with Mani in Guru Guru. I got four or five albums by both bands, but although some of them are pretty great, none of them are among my favorites. |

Chris Squire. The second place may be shared by Tony Levin and Geddy Lee. Their bass playing is often an essential part of the music.

Levin... simple reasons:
- Great bassist - KC's bassist since Discipline - Gabriel bassist "since the time they both had hairs"! (The Gabe said that, not me) Anyway Lee & Squire take the 2nd place (even if I think Squire is better at the guitar) |
