As an album I'd go with Andrew Lloyyddd Webbberrrs Variations.  Yeah I know it's odd...Andrew Lloyd Webber?? Prog???  Here's the band:

This is a very special album for me! I bought the LP in 1978. It wasn't so strange then. I think Julian Lloyd Webber talked Andrew into doing this album or maybe it was some sort of bet they had made between each other. There was history on Paganini ...written on the innersleeve. I purchased the cd for about 25 dollars. Rod Argent is superb on this one! They all are very brilliant. A strange direction for Andrew Lloyd Webber because it was a progressive rock album with progressive musicians playing the music of Paganini as opposed to a straight up Classical recording or typical Broadway play. Paganini was said by followers in the 18th century, to have been in league with the devil. Strange how those accusations haven't changed much as his 24 caprices were adapted by many Heavy Metal guitarists that wrote songs about the devil. Probably a hoax if anything as he was judged that way because he dressed in black, and was a tall man with huge hands to play the violin. His appeared shocking to folks. The whole Variations is rather bewitching to me. Especially the ambient type sections inbetween that lead into the pieces themselves. Webber was very crafty with this project. He really should have continued fusing classical with prog. Very highly recommended!

  2) as a second recommendation I think most Prog fans have overlooked: Bob Dylan's (for instance) Infidels (1983), but its not necessarily prog.

Amazing album Clap (I'm a Bob fanboy truthfully Embarrassed)

But I'll have to add this, it seems to be pretty unknown to me:
