And so what if the Flaming Lips are "blatantly alt?"  So are Muse and they're on here.

Eclectic can be one aspect of prog.  But not all prog is eclectic and not all eclectic is prog

In any case, I am only saying we rejected Sufjan for prog folk.  Eclectic...that's not my department  Big smile

Greg, you mean that FL were evaluated for Related and rejected?

No.  I don't know if it's even been formally proposed to Related, let alone evaluated --  it's had some support for Related, but I don't know if that went anywhere.  Since Prog Related doesn't have, at least public, charts, and SCs PM suggestions to that team, it can be rather difficult to follow developments/ process.  I thought I'd read something about it being under PR consideration before, but I may have misread a post. Looking back on threads, I think I supported it alternately for the proposed new album-based category, but not sure what's happening with that idea either (or if M@X has considered it).

After doing some research, it looks like iot could be formally proposed to Prog Related, but if the teams that evaluated do not support it in PR (have to see how they voted beyond no for their categories), I wouldn't want to push it.  It's much better, I think, if one has a team backing a proposal.

Looking at the charts, I had seen this before but forgot, Dean (who is on the PR team), voted Prog Related when evaluating it for Crossover (that doesn't mean that he championed it to his PR teammates though).  Was thinking Windhawk had proposed it to PR, but maybe not,

The Progfreak results are very promising (just explaining for the benefit of those who don't understand the chart), there aren't any yes votes for inclusion in a Prog category, but there are move votes that indicate Prog category worthy but not right for this team, and two Prog Related votes (no reject votes):

9M Rivertree Psych -> Move
9M Rivertree Psych (Rivertree)
9M ? Psych -> New
9M DamoXt7942 Psych -> New
10M Windhawk Crossover -> Move
10M Windhawk Crossover (Windhawk)
10M Windhawk Crossover (Windhawk)
10M Atkingani Crossover (Atkingani)
10M darqdean Crossover (darqdean)
10M darqdean Crossover (darqdean)
10M DamoXt7942 Psych (DamoXt7942)
10M Windhawk Crossover -> New
11M Eetu Psych (Eetu)
11M DamoXt7942 Psych -> Discuss
11M Eetu Psych (Eetu)
11M DamoXt7942 Psych (DamoXt7942)
11M Rivertree Psych (Rivertree)
11M Windhawk Psych -> New

Think this shows the ultimate votes on the chart as people sometimes change votes (and note that sometimes people vote in threads without voting on a chart):

So, for Pysch, three move to another category for evaluation and one unsure:

Homepage Myspace us The Flaming Lips         Psychedelic Prog Chart: Move

And for Crossover, three move to another Prog category for evlauation and one Prog Related from Dean:

Homepage Myspace us The Flaming Lips           Crossover Prog Chart: Move

So I guess  a case of not being able to agree on best category fit, but the general chart consensus was not Prog Related but consider for a Prog category itself.

Watching while most appreciating a sunset in the moment need not diminish all the glorious sunsets I have observed before. It can be much like that with music for me.

I don't care about the Flaming Lips and have never heard one of their albums, so if people think they're prog and want to put them in Crossover or whatever (although I don't want Crossover to become a dumping ground for semi-prog either) then I don't mind. But I don't see any need to recognize either of them as pseudo-semi-prog. A ton of music is pseudo-semi-prog.

I think that the positives for having a robust prog-related category outweigh the negatives for an archival site. I would, however, like to see organisation of the category, and rather different parameters/ expectations. Another option would be articles written about music that has a relation to music in the so-called Prog categories here rather than adding the albums. I think this site has a long way to go as a useful site for serious researchers (but this is more of a fan-site than a site for serious, in-depth research, and is not a site I generally use for researching/ discovering music that has a relation to progressive rock or for progressive music generally -- other than in the fora sometimes). I think there's a lot of fringe/ experimental music that has a definite relation to music in the prog and prog-umbrella categories that could be considered for PR, but the category generally aims at much more commercial music to bring in people.
