Jim's list is pretty comprehensive but I would add Aktuala.
I strongly recommend Cervello, Gruppo d'Alternativa and Officina Meccanica...all are essential.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.  Bumping this today in case anyone else has something to add.  I'm going to start investigating these now.

I like that one very much.  Complex and moving songs. Heart The italian Scott Walker of the sixties ?

Andrea said the other day that the label BTF was sitting on a gold mine. And it's true.

Do you like Area and their singer Demetro Stratos?

then you must go for the mighty SPIROSFERAClap and their Umanamnesi album (from 1996).

Nice one, Andrea. On the same youtube page, you can find a clip from ARIA PALEA's DANSE d'ANSIE. Stratos and Area are not far here too.

A couple that have already been menioned that I think are essential are GARAMOND's Quant'Altro and OSANNA's Palepoli, but there have been so many good ones mentioned that your going to have your hands full Steve.
Have fun !

Seeing as you dig Battiato, then you should probably check out his 'other' albums. He was member of a band called Osage Tribe, an experimental electronic live act named Telaio Magnetico - plus he has worked together with another quirky Italian, Juri Camicasca, on a number of albums, in particular La Evoluzione.

Another Italian release you should lend an ear to is Yugen keys man's solo project called SKE. A fairly new release that flirts around with equal measures RIO, RPI, Canterbury and electronic. Beautiful album. It's mad, avant, melodic and soothing all at once.

I don't know so much of RPI either, except for a bit of the big 3, and the albums YS and Palepoli, which have already been mentioned. However, I also have an album called Inferno, by Metamorfosi, which is probably my favourite RPI albums from the ones I've heard, I just love it all, and the singer for me is just about as good as Francesco di Giancomo, also with a very powerful voice. And keyboards, lots of keyboards. I just love it.

I know Aria Palea but I only own their debut which sounds very Tullian to my ears.

Hope to find a copy of Danze D'Ansie.

That is a very unusual path to walk along... errrr.... fly!

Today Gentle Giant and Caravan, tomorrow Beatles and Led Zeppelin? That's why I like to read your comments on prog.Tongue

Omar, that's one of my favorite RPI albums too.  I play it often!

Same for me.  So many people here have such a different perspective from mine - and that really helps me expand my own boundaries.
