You'd be surprised, Neil.
I've seen clips and such. I'm a little to young though.

you have a very good point there Neil, and its one that I've made repeatedly...the YHA is absolutely FULL of graduates doing menial jobs. In fact, why are full to the hilt with graduate toilet cleaners. Why is that?? Well,
a) they have degrees in Philosophy, Media Studies, Sociology, Archaeology or Environmental Studies; degrees which were fun to do, but in which they knew before starting them that there would be NO jobs available which would be directly related to their skills.
b) they have all come away with massive student debts, averaging £15,000, which they need to pay back. They work for the YHA however because we only pay them about £12,000 (below the pay-back threshold) and give them free food & lodgings, so they are quids in, but can't be touched....
the net result?? they work for us during the season, then spend 4 months in the winter travelling to India/ Aus/ SA/ NZ/ Canada/ US/ Inbdonesia (delete as applicable) and yet are still exempt from repayment of their student loans.....consequently, they do another 8 months for us, then disappear to one of the other destinations.... indefinitely
its a rapidly growing sub culture, esp now they realise they can't hope to put down enough money for a mortgage.......
....I asked one of them who came away with a 2.1 in Media Studies from Leeds and a £15,000 student debt, why they did it... her answer?? It was really cool to be able to use a film camera and make a mini documentary....
...meanwhile, I can't get a plumber or an electrician, because they all went to Uni to study Archaeology....
...btw, sorry Jim, this should have put into the ranting room..... |
My nephew 'dropped' out of Uni after his first year, he saw his debt mounting and saw graduate frineds with no chance of work, he saw his employment chances as low........... so he enrolled onto a plumbing course instead, with a bit of luck (and hard work) he'll soon be a qualified plumber! Smart kid!

Don't just blame the Tories; we've had ten years of new labour now and they've done nothing to change it. In fact Tony Blair was the idiot who thought that sending 50% of school leavers to uni to do media studies and learn how to be in Big Brother was a good idea. |

I don't think this should be in the Ranting Room Alan - this is a perfect forum for "bloody young people of today" type mutterings.
I know what you both mean - in my current role I've had to interview several people over the last year to act as temps, doing the menial jobs us 'proper' employees consider beneath us (eg anything which interrupts forum conversations... ) & most of them have degrees, PHDs, BAs etc etc etc; they're not just out of uni, either - some of them are in their late 20's & still confused to find no workplace where their BA in Advanced Televisual Monitoring will come in useful.
Ahem - IN MY DAY...
When I left school in 1979 it was fairly unusual for people to go on to university unless they were the significantly highest achievers; now it seems the usual process is school until 16/17, then college, then university until their early 20s... the whole process appears designed not to create useful graduates, but to delay the awful time when they have to leave school & join the real world...
...with a huge debt - good start in life, guys!

You want an electrician? Perhaps you didn't know that this forum hosts one of the best electricians around... just guess who he is... (no, not me... I can cook, but that is about all I can do in a practical sense ...)

I'll have you know I played a blinder, if I do say so myself +++smug mode +++ even getting in a couple of Porcupine Tree & Ozrics tracks but as far as recovery time, you could be right in thinking my age acts against me.

Well I have a B.Sc. (Hons) and I certainly know it's not as useful to have as I'd like. I think I should have gone into work after leaving school... oh well. Having said that, I doubt I'd be on P.A. if I had.

blimey... I thought students generally had a choice between either an interesting but useless degree, or deadly dull but useful one.....
how come you managed to find one which was both deadly dull and useless?
