^ A cool track and video! But it looks like this guy is playing an oboe, not an organ. :P

Deepest apologies everyone, got tackled by The Covid last weekend so I retreated to the couch for my 5 day isolation period. I'll populate the poll shortly and then we can get the voting under way.

I'm glad that you are ok again! Listen, given that there are however two songs per participant, two votes are too little imo. Let it be 3 as usual pls.

Thanks Mila, I'm doing fine and headed back to work today. But sorry, that violates my first rule...1 - Go lean. I know we don't have a ton of participants, but two votes each gives us 14 votes total which is fine. any more and we may as well not even vote at all or just vote for every track. So let's keep it at (2) votes each please.

Great pleasure to listen to all the tracks again - a wonderful selection. I heard the Pristine and Franz Ferdinand tracks for the first time. The latter sounds to me a bit too standard indie pop-rock (I have one of their albums, but it never incited me to explore more of their work, curiously...). Pristine on the other hand sound really great. Yes, very retro blues rock, but wonderfully executed, with - indeed - a great Hammond sound, and what a captivating voice! So, on my too long short list would appear Alan Parker's Heavy Water, The Band's Chest Fever, Claus Bantzer's Samsara II, Medeski, Martin & Wood's Broken Mirror and Pristine's Damned If I Do. Only because I cannot vote for Steve Reich and Tindersticks... Still three too many... I'm tempted to go with The Band, despite the fact that it is well known, Claus Bantzer, also because most of you might not be able to listen to it, and Medeski and his friends. If I had three votes. Since I only have two, I'll go with the first two.

My votes went to:
Barbara Dennerlein & Thilo Wolf - Just Play (I'm always impressed by someone playing walking bass on organ) Medeski Martin & Wood - Broken Mirror (Seriously cool song) I would have voted for Claus Bantzer if a third vote was allowed.

Since the electric organ was very popular in the
rock and blues music of the 60s and 70s, I expected to hear a lot of this musical
style. So, I was even more excited to see what else was to come. The most
outstanding pieces in this sense are obviously the contemporary art music
pieces by Claus Bantzer and Steve Reich.
Out of these two artists, Bantzer is more interesting for me since I have not yet had the opportunity to listen to contemporary pipe/church organ music so far. On the other hand I'm quite familiar with so-called minimal music of which Steve Reich is one of the most important exponents. Therefore, my first vote will go to Claus Bantzer’s Samsara II, also because this piece is a pleasure to listen to, whereas Reich - at the peak of his minimalist creative period - impresses rather on a musicological, intellectual level. Jazz, along with rock music, is one of the genres where the electronic organ has also been used quite frequently, and in a similar period of time. I am pleased to get to know the talented Barbara Dennerlein who is the only jazz act (in the narrower sense) in the current line-up. So my second vote will go to Barbara and her composition Just Play, performed together with Tino Wolf. As mentioned before, there are quite a few rock
and blues acts in this edition and each one is great in its own way. Apart from
the big names it was the lesser-known artists that caught my interest, esp. Church
of the Cosmic Skull who succeed particularly well in bringing the retro vibe of
the 70s into the present day. If I had a third vote, it would go to this band. I'm aware that I am breaking the fairness rule by voting for two entries by the same person. I apologise for this but musical diversity is important to me as well. However, the decisive factor was in the end that the focus of the track is on the organ which was the topic of this poll. Btw. I came across this live rendition of Steve Reich’s Four Organs. I think it helps to understand what this piece is all about. __________________________ Thank you very much for hosting, JD. And thank you all for the music. Once again a very enjoyable edition! ![]() Edited by Mila-13 - November 07 2022 at 19:44 |

I think I have heard the Reich piece before. This is great stuff of course, but I won't vote for it. Neither for Alan Parker, which I like a lot, but instead for the Charlatans and Medeski, Martin, and Wood. Some very enjoyable stuff here once more, thanks for the poll!
