I have to agree with you, even when I find most Gentle Giant's vocal annoying, Proclamation is specially exasperating for me, one thing is being dissonant, but this is absolutely out of key, terribly sung, makes me feel sick.
There's only one passage that is out of key ("Hail to power and to glory's way"), and I assume that's totally intentional. Derek Schulman is a very capable singer, just listen to "I Lost My Head" for example. He just uses his voice in very unconventional ways sometimes. The way the band harmonizes vocally can also be pretty exhausting. I can totally understand why just can't stand those vocals, but I wouldn't quite call them terribly sung. I can't stand "We Have Heaven" either, but I respect what he did there.
I love Proclamation, mostly for the striking vocal work!

*Many vocals from Dream Theater live recordings make me cringe.
*Some of Led Zepplin's (later stuff),
*when Dylan went country w/J.Cash & sounded like Kermit the frog,
*Rush-Signals (one of my favorite Rush albums) when G. Lee sings about "the kitchen"-I always laugh-it sounds funny.
*On Deep Purple's Made in Japan when Gillan & Blackmore are copying each other.
*Yes in the 80's when they sounded like Petra-some of the vocals added that layer of cheese that didn't always go down easily.
*Styx - "Lady" is so flat it makes me cringe.
*When Pink Floyd went on the road & recorded "A delicate sound of thunder" without Waters - the vocals were weak from the backup to the lead - it just didn't work for me.
"Bloody Well Right" from Supertramp - does not work for me.
WUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUHHHHHHHH???????????????
The country stuff is actually the only period where I really liked his vocals, personally.

I figured GG would get some hate here, well f**k it, I love their vocals. Their vocals are in a league of their own, I like the dissonant harmony effect of Proclaimation, rather amazing that someone posts a video of that as an example of bad prog, wtf.
I also think Trevor Horn did a decent job on Drama even if he's no Jon Anderson. I like him better than that Benoit David douche that's for sure.
Anyway. James Labrie has been mentioned already, can't we close this now?

There are alot of really expressive vocalist whose actual vocal tonality is just terrible. Toby Driver's vocals sound like some whiny high school kid alot of the time. But he's got something to say so I roll with it. Many example like that, the most prototypical being Dylan...who actually could make his voice palatable but gets perverse pleasure seeing what people will put up with.
There are some harsh vocals I like, but Agalloch's are weak.
Obviously Camel's vocals are best when overeffected and in the background.
You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

There is a contradiction here. As much as Labrie might suck, he still sings, I mean, he is able to produce actual musical tones with his singing. I would say Plant and Petty also can. Dylan, on the other hand......
