I swear that I read that he was a contestant on American Idol. I can't find anything regarding that now though, so maybe I was sniffing too much copier toner.

Dude, I knew your were messin with us after I googled him and found no such American Idol connection. Perhaps what you meant to say is that he would be the prefect candidate to be on American Idol... He is really cute and would look great in spandex. Oh, and the most important part, his music is perfect for American Idol...

Have heard the one from the prog samplerand thought it sounded like Coldplay with more guitar solo's. But it's based on a first impression.
It seems that a lot people here dislike it for being too pop. Dutch newsite nu.nl considers all of it 80s symphonic rock, although eclectic. And claims that the gentlemen can't write decent pop tunes. They didn't connect Casey to American idol either.
Somehow I find this funny and sad at the same time.

Dude, if you like it, I a truly happy for you, because I think all of us are here to find music that makes us happy.
"Pity"???
Nope you don't need to pity me, because I find the new Flying Colors to be trite & contrived. To get a reference
from where I am coming from check out a "popish" record: Art In America - Art In America. It has quite short songs
and not much prog or extended soloing but it is brilliantly fresh, new & original(for its time, mind you.)
No pity for me needed, actually "jealousy" might be a better emotion for you, as I am currently blissfully
You shouldn't be so sensitive about this release, and tell people if they don't like it, listen to something else
This is actually a progressive music forum.
I am not on other pop or altrock forums criticizing bands there. Flying Colors was promoted here in a prog forum, the music is about as prog as Green Day. You probably should realize that when a band promotes its music here in this forum and then delivers something that seems to belong in a different forum/genre it is quite reasonable for people to talk about that, as this is a prog forum!
I am delighted that you enjoy the release, but I would be quite curious to know how you felt about it in a year or so after
repeated listens.
P.S. Did you know that you look just like Dustin Hoffman???

I love prog rock. Lots of it.
And though this isn't pure prog, there are parts.
And the music is really good and well developed. It's a bit poppy, but I am guessing that a lot of the comments are from people that only had one listen-thru or only listened to amazon clips.
The album doesn't suck. And it's very listenable.
No. It's not Thick as a Brick (v1) or Lambs lie Down. It doesn't try to be.
I wish people would get over their arrogance... No wonder other people don't like prog aficionados.....

I like it more than any other work by Mike or Neal by far. It's kinda pleasant :)

I think it is a very enjoyable album - not great - but enough strong tracks to keep me very happy.
Particular favs - Blue ocean, Kayla, The storm, Everything changes & the nice little epic at the end, Infinite fire.
Getting plenty of spins from me - money well spent in my opinion.

From what I heard, this isn't actually that bad. And it's surprising to me, because I really, really don't like the other work of these musicians (particularly Neal and Portnoy).

An "ASIA" moment for some fading Prog giants? Love the try before you buy options available on the net (torrents). Won't buy. Won't give it a second try, especially with the wide variety of great prog, new and old, available to occupy my grey matter. Not sure how it's progressive anything or that it should even be listed on "Prog" Archives.

Not at all. It's a very good record, with 8 songs out of 11 being very good to great, and I'll take that.
I know there will be those (some in this thread already) who won't like it because it isn't proggy enough, but who gives a flying crap? Good music is good music, regardless of style. And this CD is mostly good music.

Oh, it's a latter day version of Asia then.

I love the funky middle section in Infinite Fire, amidst the prog stuff.

Dude, it is a cartoon. Cartoons are not real. Just like people with catfish heads(that look similar to eel heads)
aren't real. Nice Tux though.
Plus, if she were real, she still has no nose.

I always knew it was going to be a pop rock album. In fact, it was at the pop-rock section in the store where I bought it. Portnoy also said more or less how the album was going to sound like. This is like buying a "Lou Reed & Metallica" collaboration album while expecting a pure Metallica album.
With this in mind, I loved it. I really hate it when people judge music by the amount of metal or prog it has.
