I do like "Supper's Ready", but a song that seems to have a profound effect on so many people, it leaves me surprisingly cold. As for "Lizard", it passes me by every time I try to get into it. So "Supper's Ready" it is, I guess.

It's not a surprise because I've spent almost 12 months actively participating on this forum and found out that there is an overwhelming majority of progheads who hold "Supper" very close to their hearts.

It's because Supper's Ready is a classic epic, that;s why it holds a deep place in their hearts

@ProgMetaller2112 - And simply Supper's Ready is more something that you would call more melodic and something that has an immediate impact on listener. From the first listen I was astounded by the greatness of that song. And Lizard? I do appreciate that song, but it's not my taste really, even though I tried so many times. Too jazzy, too avantgarde, too hard to digest in, and serious. I know it's a timeless song, but I don't have to like everything.. I prefer "Red" , " In The Wake of .. " and " Court.. " by far.

I read the thread, but how does one infer from what was written in the thread that "Supper's Ready" is "better" than "LIzard"? Besides, define "better".

A classic epic by public acknowledgement, i.e. according to the majority from the public. That doesn't mean that everyone has to agree with the majority. And it's not the reason in itself why people love it so much.

its simply about your point of but the poll say 27 to 13 I believe and people seem to like it more than Lizard

^ There is more people preferring "Supper" than there is people preferring "Lizard". So what? That doesn't make "Supper" a "better" piece. You are leaning too much against the quantity.

In this case maybe but it's the quality of the music as to which people are voting and they seem to enjoy Supper's Ready more.

^ That's one way to interpret it.

Here are the facts:
1) The question is "which one is the best epic?" That means "which one is better", not "which one is your favorite". That invalidates a part of your claim.
2) A lot of people who respond in this thread will ignore the OP and, less likely, the question above the poll choices. These people will assume the question "which one is your favorite". This does not happen very often, but sometimes it happens.

Now, anyone, correct me if I'm wrong.

I don't see any difference between "better" and "favorite". I always consider my favorite piece the better one. That's why it's my favorite to begin with.

subjectivity vs. objectivity

the problem is it's really hard to be objective with music and most people base their "objective" views of music on subjective emotions and opinions.

but I dunno, i can draw the line usually. It's not that uncommon for me to accept that my favorite something isn't necessarily the best, but simply the one I dig the most. like with Yes. I can admit that CTTE is their overall strongest effort, but The Yes Album is still my personal favorite.

^ Before we start annoying each other again on the objectivity/subjectivity matter, allow me to note that it appears that the words "better" and "favorite" are open to interpretation. For years I used to think that "better" has to do with quality and "favorite" with enjoyment.

do they not? "better" implies that it is of greater quality than something else, and that the quality can somehow be measured so you can decide. I don't think 'favorite' has anything to do with that, a favorite is simply the one that appeals to you personally the most.

i guess one can interpret the words however one wishes but to me it seems plainly obvious that one is objective while the other is not.

also I don't recall ever having this discussion on this site before, maybe you are thinking of someone else who annoyed you? I personally have always really enjoyed this topic, i think it's important to consider objective quality vs. subjective preference when listening to music

It does, but I would say there is no difference between quality and enjoyment. I'm not trying to be objective about music, because I think it would be futile. If you can judge music objectively, good for you. I can't.

This kind of discussion comes up every once in a while here, and it can get rather nasty sometimes. But I think we're capable of keeping that from happening. Smile
