Naw. He owned on Permanent Waves. |
And Moving Pictures, Signals, P/G, Power Windows ... awesome.

How can anyone be a die-hard Rush fan but dislike Ged's vocals?
I come pretty close. I take his vocals for what they are. No they are not perfect but Rush is not Rush without them.
Then again, their are a number of bands I like quite a bit but think the singer is awful, i.e Genesis with Gabriel and Collins singing.

I can't stand his witch's style of sing ...on the contrary..Rush could be a better band, more complete with a real talent singer
My apologies if someone feel hurt/injured

Isn't Geddy's voice just one of those things where you just accept it or not?
I mean, I don't know what all the hate is about. His vocal work is incredible and listen this isn't just because I'm a Canuck here. Anyone who can play bass the way that he does AND STILL SING AT THE SAME TIME has to be put in a different vocal category. I mean we're not talking about boy bands here. (hahaha, or are we?, Alex would argue , lol)
Sometimes my girlfriend is listening to Gwen Stefani and I'm like "oh she's emulating Geddy Lee hardcore"... Go ahead, listen to her for a bit, maybe like some old No Doubt albums. You'll agree.
And other people have actually said that their singing was influenced by Geddy, can't remember who now though, but believe me, they're out there, oh yes, they are.

Ah, true, I mean I do understand where everyone is coming from on this one, but I have to always give love to the Geddynator. Vocals might be lacking, but you know what I always thought? HOLY CRAP HOW MUCH WORSE WERE PEART'S AND LIFESON'S VOICES???????

To rather inappropriately slightly misquote Miranda from the Star Trek episode "Is There No Truth in Beauty"...
"I see, Dr. McCoy, you still subscribe to the outmoded notion, promulgated by your ancient Greeks, that what is good must also be beautiful. And the reverse, of course, that what is beautiful is automatically expected to be good ...
What is ugly?
Who is to say whether Geddy Lee's vocals are too ugly to bear or too beautiful to bear?"

Geddy's vocals on Cos through PW were incredible...listen to him belt it out on "Big Money." How on Earth can one posit he makes a terrible lead singer?! I guess millions of Rushfans must be wrong.

I can accept high picthed male screaming vocals, as I can accept 90's death metal groaning, and also calssical singing in the operas. Geddy's style is not maybe the coolest way of singing, but his voice evolved during the band's career, and he sings very well on post 1980 records IMO.
(Also Bowie's voice came better during late 70's.)
BTW I sometime thought, that RUSH's songs could be covered in a cool manner with a lady singer!

I like Geddy's vocals. They keep me from taking Rush's music too seriously, which is a good thing for me. If some other vocalist with a lower pitched voice sang for Rush, their music might start to sound too menacing and dark, which would totally ruin it for me.

Just keep listening to Rush, try to listen a complete album by itself, doing NOTHING ELSE, just listening. Try also seeing them live, for that audiovisual energy connection, Rush in Rio probably, where lee's voice is not as witchy as before. Wait for the click, you will love it!

His vocals did take some getting used to from me, but I found it to be well worth it. He has his own style. It's high, but it's got depth to it. Just the way he can hit certain notes is amazing in itself. Yes, the pitch can at times get overboard, but that is all part of the fun.

I think he is the perfect singer for Rush and his voice evolevd to fit the music that they were doing over time.....I do like his modern Baritone for the songs they are doing more recently and his high shreik on the earlier stuff....and not only is he a phenomenal Bassist (Behind only Squire and possibly Levin on my list), he is a good keyboardist (I said good, not virtuoso...I remember reading a quote one time where he said something like "I'm no Keith Emerson, but I think what I can do fits our music") and often is playing Bass pedals while singing, playing bass & swithcing to Keys and sometimes even rhythm guitar...Xanadu is one of the most amazing musical juggling acts for a single musician you might ever see! Maybe he doesn't have a Jon Anderson or Freddie Mercury level voice, but taken as a package he is one AMAZING musician!

I love Geddy's voice... granted that's an acquired taste but worth the effort since the music is really awesome (especially late 70's, early 80's)
