Well DT is prog while Iron Maiden is just......a band with some progressive tendencies. But anyway, my vote goes for Maiden. Love both, but Maiden has released more good stuff than DT.

I've seen both bands live, and the one that moved me more (by far) was Maiden. I do enjoy DT, but Maiden just gets me going in a much more visceral way.

I can't get at all into Iron Maiden. The only albums that i like a bit is the latest and Seventh Sons.

Love both.
DT are more diverse than Maiden, though.
Maiden do have better album covers.

Iron Maiden. By far.
Your points:
1. Although both are great singers in terms of vocal range, etc. I do like Bruce better. 2. John Myung gotta be the better of the two technically, but at least Steve can be heard on the albums. 3. I really don't enjoy Petrucci's playing a lot, while I like all three guitarists in Maiden. 4. There is no way McBrain can do what Portnoy can, but they're both great at their kind of music. 5. I don't think Dream Theater's artwork is all bad, but Maiden's look better.

they are both amazing bands but there is defiantly a difference in the two bands that makes DT the better band by far.
Dream Theater is more prog metal than prog rock which if you like that kind of genre makes them clear favorites over iron maiden. they also have more parts in their music that builds it up to be even better. so if DT were to play a song it would be like a full band with low, high, and middle sounding instruments. where iron maiden would only sound like a band with one or two different instruments if they were to play the same song their way.

I know that maiden is a very important band in the history of Metal and a mayor influence on Dream Theater, However I chose Dream Theater because DT's albums aren't just pure metal records as maiden's ar, but prog records and Prog is my music preference than Metal.

WTF is with people saying you can't hear the bass? The bass is plenty present and clear on all the recent DT albums. A lot of the time in modern metal bass is just double the guitar riffs and acting as an extension of the low end, but it's definitely there. Just because a bass player isn't always play a constantly different part (like they might in fusion for example) doesn't make it inaudible. If you removed the bass from the DT tracks, they would sound incredibly thin. The whole point is that you don't really notice the bass because essentially , as I said, it's playing the role of acting as low end extension for electric guitar.
Anyway, that said, I love both bands, although prefer DT. IM has released one masterpiece IMO (Powerslave) while DT takes the cake with both Images and Words and Awake. Maiden, great and all, but man they really killed the E-C-D chord progression lol. Janick Gers always loses points for Maiden for me, super f**king sloppy player. When I saw IM live Janick was missing notes, bending out of tune, doing poorly intonated vibrato like no tomorrow and it made me cringe. Luckily they've got Adrian Smith, who actually has an amazing ear for intonation and a much more developed sense of phrasing.

Maiden for me. Just preference. Although I Awake and Piece of Mind are tied for the spot of my #2 favorite album ever.

This is tough choice for some of us to make. Have voted for DT however, if the poll had been for the best live band I would have gone for IM.

true what he has to get there. I like Maiden, but I never put down any band and saying that they are the worst in the in-tired world. I really don't like many bands but I just keep my comment to myself.

Iron Maiden is my absolute favorite metal band, followed by Helloween, Judas Priest and, finally, the great and magnificent Dream Theater. Maiden wins...

Ahh this always kills me. It's like choosing between my dad and my brother you know. Iron Maiden is like my dad, and Dream Theater like my brother. I like hanging out and chilling with my brother more, because he's such a cool guy, but I respect my dad more and I know he's wise and came first before both of us. I have to take DT because they're definitely my favorite band ever, but I also have a special soft spot for Maiden.

Equal in my book, both great bands, but I don't listen to them as much as a whole bunch of groups.

They both have excellent musicians.
Dickinson vs LaBrie- Hard decision. Both have a great vocal range. Dickinson rarely grates when he hits the high notes, though. Whereas LaBrie, although excellent most of the time, sometimes his voice packs it in on the high pitched parts. I'll give the edge to Dickinson here. Although, LaBrie excels when singing softer stuff.
Guitars- Smith, Murray, and Gers are the Three Horsemen, a bloody brilliant team of guitarists. Some don't like Janick's attempts to be Pete Townsend on stage (the acrobatics and stunts), but I think he adds stage presence and personality to the band. I actually think Dave Murray is the best Maiden guitarist, though. Let's not forget, he's been there all along the way alongside Steve, and sometimes he gets overlooked in favour of Adrian Smith. Petrucci is just amazing, and could stand his own against Maiden's trio. I wonder if, given the chance, could any of Maiden's players do some of the stuff he has done.
Drums- Clive Burr was good. Nicko McBrain is bloody awesome, but Portnoy is just a god. He's the Bonham or Moon of this era, in my opinion.
Bass- Harris is fantastic, and you can always hear him plodding along in the background, unlike Myung, who, although great, often follows the guitar lead, and often can't be heard in the mix. Notable exceptions are his great solos in 'Panic Attack', 'Metropolis 1', 'A Change Of Seasons', and 'The Dance of Eternity'.
I love both groups a lot. It's hard to pick a winner. DT have more variety than IM, though, so I'll give them the edge.

in terms of skill they play in a complete different level.
petrucci canīt be compared to them.. and sorry but i donīt think that any of maidens soli get even close to petruccis feeling and skills for example in the hollow years solo from live at budokan!
