Hell, no band is completely original. They all borrow elements from different influences. DT`s being metal and prog. They weren`t he first band to mix those together, but one of them.
It's pretty well impossible to say DT doesn`t have any good musicians, whether you like their music or not. John Petrucci`s been writting colums in guitar world magazine for a reason. He knows what he`s doing.

I knew there was something weird about him ,he knew it was bed time last night so whats with this sao tome or whatever. I'm from Cardiff by the way

Aha - I notice everything, but i'm stuck in at the moment - too dangerous to venture out coz all my local pubs are full of Eccles yobbos - looking to avenge the poor sod - who got his head kicked in behind one of my local pubs - The Lord Nelson on the A666 (Bolton Road) - Has the number of the beast got anything to do with it !!!

Well,I was born on the A666 (well,at least a house on the A666-not in a shoe box a la Monty Python ) and now live just 66 yds from that very A666 (Blackburn Rd,Bolton)

If riffs are elements, then OK - but I don't think they are. Riffs occupy too much of a piece of music to be just influence - unless you consider that Vanilla Ice was "influenced" by Queen...

It's totally possible... but I will resist temptation this once "Good" is such a subjective word, and requires qualification.

I'm not such a great DT-Fan as I used to be, but these statements I can't leave without comment:
1. How can you play fast, if you can't play well????
2. James LaBrie is not a great singer (I also would wish they'd another one), but there are worse ones!
3. Just listen to I&W!
4.Just listen to "Metropolis Pt.2" or "SDOIT"!
5.I think they filled already enough big halls!
6.I am middle-aged,but not a computer analyst, but I like them, although my favorite Prog-Metal band is POS not DT!
7.Would you call ELP seriously untalented?What kind of music are listening to? I don't think Prog! What are you doing in a Prog forum?
8.To call everything crap what one does not like is IMHO really the most unqualified statement ever. There is much stuff I don't like, even from the things on this site, but if it's not my taste is different from being crap (like Britney Spears or the alikes)!
