My biggest disappointment was getting SFAM by Dream Theater. I had heard so much about these guys and how they were the greatest thing since sliced bread. But I absolutely hated it.

hahahha.... that's great....looks like I wasted $6 hahah... I bought
that album this week used, and was my attempt to see what all the
fuss is about. Oh well.... as Jeff reminded me I will follow my
own freely dispensed advice and give it the 'Seven Listens' before I
judge it. After all it's prog..not pop.. sometimes it takes
several times for it to hit you...though I'm not holding my breath
already having heard various samples and having severe headaches and
the sh*ts after hearing them.

Yup I gave this thing the usual 7 listens, and I couldn't take anymore after that. The longest it has ever taken me to get an album was my first Opeth album, Blackwater Park. It took 5 listens to get into that one but once I did I never looked back (I now have all their albums and practically worship these guys ).
I just don't get Dream Theater

Discipline was a huge let down for me too. I still can't get into it. Also Sigur Ros - (). I had read hundreds of five star reviews for this band and they sounded right up my alley, but man what a terrible record. |
() is naked unfilnchingly raw and emotional; where most of their albums are a deep breath in, () is what remains in the lungs after a total exhulation. Brilliant! I do not classify them as "prog" as most other professional reviewers assure their readers they do not fall under that classification.
Anyway, my major disapointment is with all Neo Prog but I knew that it stunk in the first place so that really does not count. As for real music I am not a big fan of the new Rush albums.

I'm just too rooted in the older stuff (with PT being a modern
exception...love them) to get all worked up by hyper-w**king and the
such... that's what I have ELP for if I want to hear muso's going all
out. Still I'll keep an open mind...but it is so much fun to
crack a few at DT's expense. I did have one album that intriqued
me enough that even though I didn't 'get' it...I stuck with it past the
7 listens and finally got... that was my first Tangerine Dream album,
Phaedra. Have since purchased multiple albums from them and
love pulling them out once in awhile.

Yes, because I read no critics, nothing. Having (and liking) their 60's and 70's stuff, I just couldn't expect for such a disaster album from the brilliant band... And I bought it... Alas! |
When I read the reviews of this album on this site - I have t osay I was quite surprised. OK, so it's not one of their best albums, but I don't think it is that bad either (especially compared to the "Jethro Straits" trilogy of Crest of a Knave, Rock Island and Catfish Rising).
If there is one overrated JT album, then it has to be "Aqualung". I really do not see why people rave about this album so much. Sure, it's got some great tracks (Aqualung, Mother Goose and Locomotive Breath, spring to mind) but it's got some prett duff ones also (Cross-eyed Mary, Up to Me, Hymn 42). To me, it will always be a fairly patchy Tull album sandwiched between the masterpieces that are Benefit and Thick As A Brick.

You know, I'll almost agree with you on this one. Aqualung was the first prog album I ever bought. I really like most of the songs (esp. My God, Hymn 43, Mother Goose). However, Thick as a Brick is a much stronger album IMO, and on repeated listening, Stand Up and Benefit are more enjoyable for me than Aqualung. (Also, I really don't care for those 1 1/2 minute acoustic songs that fill in the gaps and never much cared for the extended piano intro to Locomotive Breath).

So, did Aqualung disappoint you... and heavily?

I recently got the Pure Reason Revolution album, expecting great things, but right now I can't see what all fuss is about. I'll be fair and give it some more listens and maybe something will click.

Under Wraps - Jethro Tull: how such a horrible album came from such a great band amazes me still.

Holy smokes, I can't agree more! I bought it and felt totally underwhelmed. Can't believe Terry Brown and Hugh Syme would associate with such rubbish.

I kind of feel like Close to the Edge was a bit of a dissapointment. Of, course, I like a lot, and I would probably give it four stars, but I sort of expected to have a revelation that would be the turning point of my life or something after reading the reviews on this site.
