The Earl's Court versions maight be the best but the longest were June 77. 43 mins...

Of course as JPJ used the Alembic 8 string competing with Greg Lake; had the Yamaha, competing with Keith Emerson and both doing Nutrocker there may be a really good case for JPJ v. ELP.

I never post anything anywhere without doing more than basic research, often in depth.

JP for Lucifer Rising. Different sound different solo different everything for Zeppelin numbers. Most prog rock moment for Zeppelin are the 1977 concert performances of No Quarter.

^ I agree in terms of solo work, by far.  As for with Zep, that's much harder but it wouldn't be Jones.   Jones was solid as a rock, a multi-instrumentalist, but he wasn't any more progressive than the other members.   In some ways less so.

I also have the impression that it was John Paul Jones. Though I guess they were interested in prog in general anyway. I believe they were rather impressed with Yes, and said they wanted to do something proggish like them. Though for some reason they were not impressed when they toured with Jethro Tull (it's a shame, imagine if, since they were touring together, they had gotten John Anderson to play the flute intro for them on Stairway to Heaven... and then come back at the end for the hard rocking part to join the heaviness).
