Based on the Now That's What I Call Music series and inspired by GrumpyProgFan, here's your chance to put together your ideal prog compilation album for a particular year - starting with 1967 - not necessarily picking your favourite songs, but choosing 20 popular songs by 20 different artists that are most likely to appeal to a wider audience as well as songs that best represent that year in prog, and hopefully, it'll be a million-seller. Don't worry if you can't come up with the full 20 songs to make up a compilation though. You could always put your album out on a budget label instead, where it'll no doubt end up in a charity shop bargain bin. Tongue

Now That's What I Call Prog 1967

01. Julie Driscoll, Brian Auger & the Trinity - Season of the Witch
02. The Beatles - Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds
03. Tim Buckley - No Man Can Find the War
04. Captain Beefheart - Autumn's Child
05. Cream - Sunshine of Your Love
06. The Doors - Light My Fire
07. Fifty Foot Hose - Fantasy
08. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Purple Haze
09. Jefferson Airplane - White Rabbit
10. Love - Alone Again Or
11. The Moody Blues - Nights in White Satin
12. The Mothers of Invention - Invocation and Ritual Dance
13. The Nice - Rondo
14. Pink Floyd - Interstellar Overdrive
15. Procol Harum - A Whiter Shade of Pale
16. The Rolling Stones - 2000 Light Years from Home
17. Traffic - Dear Mr. Fantasy
18. Vanilla Fudge - People Get Ready
19. The Who - I Can See for Miles
20. The Zodiac - Aries

Hi

And all of these were heard, loud and clear, on the FM dial in Madison at the time, with the idiots in the AM station making fun of the drunks, the stoneys and the clothing, not to mention the dope -- which (hypocritically) the station also used to pick up girls with!

We can call it "prog" now, but in the end, it was the history of music telling a bad signal (MONO in the AM band) that was being replaced by a good signal (STEREO in the FM band) ... which made the music sound better and cleaner ... all of a sudden, you are hearing the opening of 2001 at home ... instead of the movie theater ... for a nice example, although none of these will EVER replace the Cinerama Dome!

It was an interesting time, that came crashing down later with students getting shot and falling in a few places and the UW was completely covered by the ROTS and the NG (I worked at the Rathskeller at the time!) and they were having a riot frisking all the women! It was sick to say the least!

But the music never died, and I remember you fondly Neil! We were right ... but many of those haters are still in control of the country!

PS Fairport Convention and Pentangle need to be added to the list??? ... thx

^ It was tricky for me too, as most of the 20 songs I chose are not strictly prog either. I was beginning to wonder if I should have started from 1968 instead. Smile

I read it as this was for any year right here and that you just started with 1967.

It should be a doddle to choose 20 prog songs - no doubt including YES, Genesis & King Crimson - once we reach 1969. Smile

I just chose what I had as part of another list for that year. All of these albums that these tracks are off are at least on the Prog related spectrum to me. Alphabetically listed.

The Beatles "A Day in the Life" (Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club, 1967)
Tim Buckley "Phantasmagoria in Two" (Goodbye and Hello, 1967)
Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band "Autumn's Child" (Safe as Milk, 1967)
Leonard Cohen "Suzanne" (Songs of Leonard Cohen, 1967)
The Doors "The Crystal Ship" (The Doors, 1967)
Fifty Foot Hose "Fantasy" (Cauldron, 1967)
Mort Garson "Aquarius The Lover of Life" (The Zodiac - Cosmic Sounds, 1967)
Hansson & Karlsson "Tax Free" (Monument, 1967)
The Jimi Hendrix Experience "3rd Stone From the Sun' (Are You Experienced, 1967)
Jefferson Airplane "White Rabbit" (Surrealistic Pillow, 1967)
Pearls Before Swine "Ballad to an Amber Lady" (One Nation Underground, 1967)
Pink Floyd "Astronomy Domine' (The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, 1967)
The Velvet Underground & Nico "Venus in Furs" (s/t, 1967)

Hi,

The only thing that needs to be said, is that fans/folks today do not realize how huge so many of these became because of the new FM signal (STEREO!!!!!)  ... remember that none of them were played on regular AM radio (MONO!!!!!), which made a huge difference for the "new music" ...

That's not to say that the things on AM radio were not good, there were a few, but the real headline was the new music that FM radio showcased ... and pretty much none of it was played on AM radio at all which was about the numbers ... like some around here! Then, in 1967 and 1968, all of this music was NEW and there were no numbers whatsoever ... and it should tell you something about the art and the music ... that didn't need numbers to get heard!

The next "scene" for music, won't need the numbers either ... and hopefully it will bring a new day, a new sound and a new person to enjoy the music, instead of being stuck on the thing that has hurt the music most in the past 30/40 years.

This is a really cool idea! Honestly, the hard part isn't picking out the songs but putting them in an order that would make sense as a properly paced track list if this were an actual compilation LOL

1. Scott Walker - Mathilde
2. The Rolling Stones - She's A Rainbow
3. H.P. Lovecraft - The White Ship
4. The Nice - Rondo
5. The Doors - Light My Fire
6. Procol Harum - Conquistador
7. The Beach Boys - Good Vibrations
8. Miles Davis - Dolores
9. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Little Wing
10. The Mothers Of Invention - Brown Shoes Don't Make It
11. The Beatles - Getting Better
12. The Who - I Can See For Miles
13. Jefferson Airplane - White Rabbit
14. Pink Floyd - Interstellar Overdrive
15. The Moody Blues - Nights In White Satin

Sorry, I misled you. I should have said "a particular year" in the intro instead of "any particular year". I've altered it now. Embarrassed

Good choice! I wish I'd included Buffalo Springfield in my list too. Broken Arrow  has more changes of tempo and time signature than your average prog classic. Smile
