I LOVE Rush instrumental work i think their melodies are awesome and their songs are awesome...but i feel SOOO awful listening to geddy lees vocals....can anyone comfort me? He just sounds like a little kid screaming at the top of his lungs.
Well, just so this isnt a strange topic...what do ou guys thi nk of his vocals? Are there any HARD CORE Rush fans that don't even really dig his vocals sometimes?
Just curious??

I've always loved Geddy's voice. But I bet there are many who don't like it. Once, I played Bravado in the prescence of a friend of mine, and her comment on the song was "Oh. I quite like the song, but the girl who's singing is just awful.".

I absolutely "dig" Lee's vocals. how depreciating can things get only because it isn't the common thing.

I like alot of uncommon vocalists, though, thats the thing. I just have SUCH a hard time, i think it is because i heard coheed and cambria before i heard Rush? So i feel like a loser listening to Rush, it just makes me cringe I feel like I am listening to some emo punk singer or something.
But i always try to convince myself that he was truly unique, which he was, and his vocal stylings were prettty new at the time. I just can;t do it though! It always goes back to coheed, and my utter hatred for that vocal sound.

I must agree with The Lost Chord. I have loved RUSH's music since I saw the 2112 concert tour way back when. But I have never been able to appreciate Geddy's voice. However, it doesn't stop me from appreciating the band.

No problem with his vocals, love his voice on "Hemispheres" and "Fly By Night"

If you think Geddy screams or sings like a girl now, you probably haven't listened to recent Rush albums properly.. He's dropped his register quite noticeably, and now he sings nowhere as high or shrill as he did in the Seventies. That said, he's one of my favourite vocalists, because he sings in a very expressive way - moreover, he can interpret very effectively lyrics he didn't write himself.

It's not so bad on "Moving Pictures". But on that song "The Trees" I really want to kill something.

His prog- rush era singing is at the top of my favorite vocals list. I think his high vocals are awesome, especially in the Cygnus epics. I's a matter of taste and opinion. I guess it also has to do with my roots, I started listening to both prog and rush through the singing and James Labrie and Geddy, two of the most criticized singers in prog. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!! GHOST RIDER IS AN ADMIN!!!!!!! Now he will terrorize the forum with his new power by turning it into an anti-Dream Theater forum!!!!!! (hangs himself) .. Seriously, I'd get along with you fine if you and Micky didn't constantly write bashing (even if it's for fun) comments in every single DT Thread. You have a responsibility to give a good impression now that your a Mod.

*starts crying* I'm not a he, I'm a she.... And you are perfectly right about the bashing... Not only have I stopped that, but today I found SFAM at a discounted price (very much so, I have to say...) and bought it - and I also intend to review it as fairly as I can! As to Micky, though, I can't guarantee he won't keep on bashing DT.. He isn't a Mod, after all!

I'll take Geddy's vocals over a myriad of other vocalists out there. Nothing at all wrong with his singing.

Woops... That explains why you hate Dt! They have pretty much no girl fans. Honestly, I would have bet everything I have on the fact that there will never be a female Mod on the biggest prorressive rock site. Go figure. Not because I'm sexist or anything, but because 99% of prog fans are men! |
A lady friend of mine has every DT album and has seen them 8 times including the Radio City Music Hall performance for SCORE.

It's been difficult for me to get into Rush because of Geddy's
vocals. Definitely an acquired taste. Great band though,
unlike Dream Theater!

I can understand why some might find Geddy's 70's high pitched vocals irritating, but I love his voice and couldn't imagine any other vocal style to accompany Rush's music. Just keep listening TLC, maybe one day it will "click". And to Ghostrider, Congratulations on becoming a moderator. I've wanted to say something before but I didn't see a thread dedicated to your promotion.
