Is it just me, but have you noticed that DT studio albums alternate between "Oh, that's good!" and "oh dear, why?"

What?

Ah. Sorry, Forgot the starting point (US sales figures in brackets). Metropolis good (179,000+), Six Degrees heavy going (115,000+), Train of Thought good (143,000+), Octavarium a shade predictable (106,000+).

Yeah, afraid I don't think that's true. They are a favorite of mine, and I simply don't think any of those releases are "Oh dear, why?"

I am but a servant of the mighty Fripp, the sound of whose loins shall forever be upon the tongues of his followers.

If you mean that half is good and half is bad...that's almost how I feel. I like Images, Scenes, Six Degrees, and Octavarium. Train of Thought and Falling into Infinity are true blunders. Awake is so-so.

mmm... I dont know if there is a pattern... I mostly like their albums, except Awake for some reason, and Im really looking forward to Systematick (or... so) chaos...

As for record sales... I thought Octavarium did much better... in fact, I think those numbers are a bit too low... DT has sold more than 6 millon albums! Dont really think Scenes only (only?) sold 179,000 copies...

Their record company did a poor job at promoting them, but they couldn't get out of the contract. I think they will have much more success with Roadrunner.Big%20smile

Where did you get those numbers ? Are the worldwide sales also available ? I would be interested to take a look.

From wikipedia's DT discography entry, there were no worldwide sales figures

To an extent with the last 6 albums I think your right. Awake was a very good album, but Falling Into Infinity was disappointing, then Scenes from a Memory was stunning. Six degrees wasnt all that good IMO, but I Train Of Thought was a real grower, and Octavarium was dreadful. So yeah, the last 6 albums have been all a bit up and down, but only Octavarium was really a bad album, with FII and SDOIT being merely a bit below par. The first two albums were both rather good.

Roadrunner make me shudder at the moment when you look at their vacuum-cleaner approach to aquiring *new* bands (CoF, Nightwish, DragonForce, Within Temptation, Opeth, Porcupine Tree, Dream Theater, Megadeath, etc.)

Yes, that I know, and I think they will have more success too, they certainly deserve it!

But what I said is that in the Score DVD they say they have sold over 6 million copies, so by now those numbers must have changed!!! I mean, they have 8 studio albums, a few live albums and recopilations (which both always sell less)... so those 8 studio albums must have sold more than 600,000 copies or so... of course some more than other. Isnt Images and words doble platinum? Aint that like 2 million copies... or was it 1 million? So if those numbers are like... from the year they came out, now they must be quite higher... I mean, again, Scenes must have sold at least 600,000 copies, though I think it´s way more than that!!!

I agree especially with the difference between Images and Words & Awake.  Images and Words is like glorified Muzak keyboards with some shredding guitar and machine-gun drums added for good measure - a real travesty!  Awake, on the other hand, is one of their best albums - ever!
