Apologies, even using the local search engine I can't find the original thread. However, I want to thanks those who were discussing Battles about 14 days ago: your comments caused me to go seek a copy of Mirrored. The CD arrived on Friday and it has been steadily played since. Other than jazz rock fusion, this is the best recommendation I've got from PA this year. Difficult to define - my daughter immediately loaded her Ipod with the music- urbane post rock (echoes of heavy machinery throbbing in background as the rhythmic underpinning), some moments reminding me of Philip Glass film scores (the web suggests math rock, although Battle s veer into minimalism I'm sure), the synthed voices at one point suggesting the Munkins (???) in Over The Rainbow, another vaguely like Devo, plus the sampling in real time, etc.. But definitely new to my ears, an exciting mix.

I don't get this band, the "vocals" pretty much ruin it for me.

Try some of their earlier EPs, there are no vocals at all.

I'll have to agree with Mr. Heath here, Battles are amazing.

Mirrored is my favorite album of the year so far. I had to admit that when I first heard it I hated it because of the vocals and the dance feel the album has from time to time, but after a few months I gave the band another spin and, bam!, instant love. I think that being a huge fan of Minimalism helped me a lot in liking them. Krautrock fans will enjoy them as well.

Bryan, the thing that helped me "get" them was this live video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PbYLafK1OU
Their music certainly looks more impressive here than in their album and it helped me appreciate them more.

^^^ At least you enjoyed them. That video is superb! The drummer, the beats, playing guitar with one hand while playing the piano with the other. Such energy...

Brilliant.

Give Don Caballero a listen, they were interesting too back in the day. I can't remember which members they share but there's a definite continuity, except that Don Cab sound a bit more like a conventional guitar-based math band.

Battles are great. That's all I can say at the moment. Don Caballero were also really great. I'm about to listen to a Helmet album now, their drummer is the one in Battles.

It really was energetic and fun to watch and listen to... as I said ... not exactly my style of music but very very good stuff.

That reminds me...I have something I've been meaning to send to you.

^^^^  I've heard that they played their single "Atlas". Sleeper was the one who told me in the Post-Rock/Metal thread.

Have you heard any of their releases?

Yes I saw them on that and they sounded pretty interesting, shame they only got to play one song. A band I'll be checking out more.

On the subject of that Jools Holland show I thought Richard Thompson was brilliant and Roisin Murphy has an incredible voice although not the kind of stuff I would usually listen too.

Exciting band exciting record. For those who are interested in math rock, check out some bands such as polvo, don caballero, Yona-kit and an early influence, the post punks Nomeansno. Definately math in my book.

Good job.  Such an addition helps keep progarchives relevant, progressive, and interesting.

Battles has certainly grown on me.
Just a fanboy passin' through.
