Topic: Ommadawn v. Amarok Posted: May 13 2008 at 23:22 |
For me this isn't even a contest. AMAROK is hands down one of the greatest albums I've ever heard. When people ask you the stupid "10 albums on a desert island" question, this is always one of them for me, and the only justification that I can offer is by listening to the album and trying to tell me that I'm wrong.
What do you guys think though?

Both are fantastic, but my sentiments are very similar to yours, as "Amarok" is one of my favorite albums of all time.
This was a very appropriate poll as Amarok is in many ways an Ommadawn II, but has quite the personality of its own as well.

Ommadawn is IMO the best Oldfield album ever.
Amarok was a good album at the time it was released but its very far away from oldfield's best works.

Ommadawn is Oldfield´s masterpiece in my opinion. A perfect combination of acoustic and electric sounds, stunningly beautiful melodies and influences from lots of different musical styles; folk, rock, classical.
Amarok was a positive return to a more complex album after his pop and new age adventures - and it is a good album but not as good as his first four.

I will never forget...Oldfield took me into progressive rock. Since then i have heard many beautiful albums from various artist but my absolute number one is Ommadawan. Such a naivity in a complex way...such childish themes...and listen to his unique guitar playing. No one can play the electric guitar like Oldfield does. But AMAROK ...came from nowhere.. and kicks ass again. I think that AMAROK is a masterpiece in Progressive rock genre. It is true, that you have to give it more time to listen...but once you get the main idea...you can just sit down, fasten your seats belt and let yourself go on a coulourful adventure ride. I love both of them. Sorry for my English :)

I actually decided yesterday that I needed to buy some Mike Oldfield. I don't have any of his albums, and don't think I've ever heard any of his songs before. I thought I'd start with Tubular Bells, but does anyone have a suggestion for a good album of his for me to start with?

I strangely chose Amarok only because I have never truly given Ommygod , sorry Ommadawn ......a chance.

I never post anything anywhere without doing more than basic research, often in depth.

Very close call on this one, I love em both so much. But i think AMAROK is the real masterpiece, the whole thing is great. Ommadawn on the other hand has one perfect side and one good side(with a fantastic ending).
and Endless Wire, start with Tubular Bells and then Ommadawn.

Start with AMAROK. But really, you could either start with AMAROK, Tubular Bells, Ommadawn... they're all great.
