One of the two founding Canterbury bands who later heavily explored the realms of jazz, the other the creator of Zeuhl. Both were very important in their heydays and both pioneered new sounds in the early 1970s that have influenced many groups to follow. Which is your favorite and why?

Please: If you are not familiar with one or both of the band's material, I urge that you use the links provided and at least listen to the samples on their respective pages.

Magma's PA page: http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=646

As always, discussions are encouraged.

Toughest one yet for me... Confused

If I really really really really had to choose, I'd pick Soft Machine...

RIP in bossa nova heaven.

Argh... Another poll for choosing between my favourites.  This a great contest for a contest of greats.  Two of my favourite bands, and I'd say the two most important of their categories (two of my favourite categories at that).  If push came to shove, I would choose Magma because Magma has more material that I frequently listen to, but....  I really love both.  I'll let others duke it out on this one at this time.  Soft Machine and Magma are de hundin.

Both exceptional. Gave the vote to Magma, since the darkness and female vocals on MDK hit me very hard.

I really enjoy Soft Machine (Third is a 5+ star album) but I'm becoming very addicted to Magma; they've become such a special band for me.  Magma gets the vote here, and I thought it would be a tougher call but actually Magma's a clear favorite for me.  Magma v. National Health, for example, would really be a toss-up, couldn't choose there.

Magma, easily. The 3rd greatest band of all time.Thumbs%20Up Hopefully the power of MDK sweeps Third from under it's ass.
*Runs from febus*Tongue

Third
is still fantastic and easily a 5 star album though.

I have a soft spot for Soft Machine, but I really dig Magma as well, especially 1001 Centigrades and MDK. Both bands have some of the most interesting sounds I have ever heard, refreshing alternatives to the "usual" (i.e. Pink Floyd, ELP, Yes, Genesis, etc.). However, Soft Machine's almost seamless musical evolution from psychedelia to jazz gives them the slightest of edges.

"The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side." - HST

Ouch!!! two of my favorites pitting against each otherShockedShockedShocked...............Only Alex07  could do something as machiavelicEvil%20Smile like that......why??but why does he do things like that??

So let see! what do we have here......Robert Wyatt/J.Marshall on one side, Christian Vander on the other
K.Ayers/ Hugh Hopper here,    J.Top/Paganotti there

Mike Ratledge  with Soft..............oh! who plays keys for Magma??

and you have to add the exceptional Karl Jenkins in later Soft period

                            Volume 2 versus 1001 centigrades...easy choice
Soft Machine 1  versus Kobaia...oh easy again
THIRD and MDK ??? the choc of the titans...............oh! Moon in June makes the difference.
                            Kohntakosaz beats Fouth and Fifth

But Sixth, seven, Bundles and the great Softs over Attack, udu wudu or merci!

So Soft Machine will win because of more variety in their music..what a surprise!!LOLWink

Finally, febus showing his Errol Flynn imitation! Probably the funniest poll ever because of so many Soft vs Lava extremists . Hey, what happens if ya like both? Look at my avatar, I love both! LOL

I love Third, but I love MDK even more. Plus, Magma is more fun and has released more top-notch albums, to me at least.

Even harder than Area vs Gong. I think I'll pass.
