I now have all of Weather Report's albums up until Heavy Weather and I think they're all fantastic.
I'm really curious as to if any of their later stuff is worth hearing, especially as I'm really thirsting for some more WR. What do you guys think? Is any of it worth trying out (or none or all)? |

I have "Mr. Gone" and "Night Passage", and i can recommend them.
While not as good as their earlier albums, they still feature the fiery bass of Jaco Pastorius, and is quite interesting to listen to. Nothing really special, though, but if you like Weather Report and Jazz, you'd probably like those too. |

The live double 8.30 has its moments.
Joe Zawinul solos and with his Syndicate push the world fusion boundaries - helped by the presence of the likes of Scott Henderson |

i say get 8:30 next, then Mr Gone.
after that, there's nothing worth having by WR, unless you are a completest. Joe Zawinul & The Zawinul Syndicate are a great extension of Weather Report, with younger musicians, and more of a world/jazz influence, (and lots of Jaco-type bass work) I would get the 2 disc World Tour album, that album SMOKES!!! |

I have to disagree that there's "nothing worth having" after Mr. Gone. While it is true that the post-Pastorius period (try saying that fast) is a diminishment, there's some great stuff on subsequent albums:
Rockin' In Rhythm & Three Views Of A Secret from Night Passage;
Dara Factor One & Volcano For Hire from Weather Report;
Two Lines from Procession;
D-flat Waltz & title track from Domino Theory;
Corner Pocket from Sportin' Life;
title track & Update from This Is This.
And undoubtedly you'll want Live & Unreleased, to compare with 8:30.

You can't go wrong with this album : I didn't listen the other Zawinul live records, but this one is truly magical.
Weather Report is somewhat one of a kind in the jazz-rock/fusion realm. Pat Metheny and Jan Garbarek also melted world music with jazz but much later.
In France, there is the band Sixun, which had a similar approach to WR. Their album "explore" is probably their best. The drummer, Paco Séry, played with Zawinul on some of his live records. Also worth mentioning is the great Richard Bona.
Another french guy, Khalil Chahine, can be cited as a "melter' of two worlds (western and oriental).
And last but not least, the underrated (at least in France) guitarist Pierre Bensusan, has released some fine fusion albums (in the meaning of world music meets jazz) : 'Solilaï' and 'Spices' both featuring Didier Malherbe, of Gong fame.
