Topic: Are the Decemberists prog? Posted: January 09 2011 at 09:23 |
OK, I'll admit I'm not that familiar with this band. I have heard some of their songs and they sounded like an alternative folky kind of band to me. I know they are well known by non prog fans and in non prog circles which also makes me kind of suspicious. Whenever I see a band mentioned along side all the other indie bands out there it makes me think question a band's prog cred. However, they are listed in this website so there must be something to them that makes them proggy. So just how much of a prog band are they?

Their previous album is (brilliant) prog-folk and that's the one I'd recommend you. Their new one is indie-folk/country, not progressive but still very good.

The last two albums are brilliant prog folk. I haven't heard the new one yet, but will get it. There was an interesting article & interview with them in the Guardian newspaper last Friday, with lots of talk about how they have moved more to their American roots and taken quite a lot from REM, to the extent that Buck guests on the album.
Actually, I quite like REM, so I would get it anyway.

Castaways and Cutouts - Somewhat prog but excellent overall Her Majesty - Not much prog at all- a good effort Picaresque - Not much prog at all, but excellent The Crane Wife - A masterful mix of prog and acoustic rock- check out "The Island" (5 stars) The Hazards of Love - A prog folk opera with many repeating motifs and themes (5 stars) The King is Dead - Not prog in any sense of the word, but good country / rock / folk music
The Tain (EP) - definite prog, good stuff.

The Island suite from The Crane Wife is one of my favorite prog songs of last decade.

what I heard from them didn't sound prog at all. Rather folky alternative rock.

Yeah this, although I haven't listened to them all, I agree with the ones I've heard, those are Hazards of Love, The Crane Wife and Castaways Cutouts. And you're surely right with the rest, I don't doubt that from you, Robert.

As i remember last time we discussed their Prog relevance it lasted 18 + pages, few weeks of arguing, at the end it was hillarious, amusing and everybody were happy so are they prog, well few albums like The Crane wife, Picaresque, Hazarads of love has a lot of prog moments, last album is not prog in any sense

I'm guessing similar threads have been made concerning Radiohead, Umphrey's Mcgee, Pink Floyd and the Moody Blues. :) I'm sure there are many others as well.

I heard all their albums.
Still don't now if they are Prog or not, but the Prog Folk team says yes and Sean is not easy to convince, so I trust them
