Actually he hasn't exactly been ignored if you add up the reviews. I notice that The Singles Collection was moved to compilations, but unless I'm mistaken it is not one but is just called The Singles Collection.

Love "After the Rain" the best--- listened to it endlessly when it came out and bought the CD several years ago and still like it.
Did not however follow his career as I did with others---

Rypdal is hit or miss for me, but the two i have-the self-titled one from 1971 and 1974's What Comes After, his best record, work wonders for me, and have stood the test of time for me very well.
He can be very abstract, and that is no problem with me, in fact, i love it (especially What Comes After) but that would render him innacessible for some. I also have the dvd with him, Vitous and Gurtu, and it is a delight! Definitely under-rated, in the grand scheme of things, and should be focused on more than he is. |

I only know "If Mountains Could Sing" which is really nice. I was thinking the other day that I should get more albums of him. He reminds me of Allan Holdsworth, although there are also a lot of differences with him.

Hi,
Goodness ... you have not been checking out on me lately! I like to say naughty things about some reviewers here that do not think that Terje Rypdal is progressive! I couldn't careless really ... the music is so much better than two thirds of the top ten listed here in my book! ... and in many ways this stuff is so much more progressive in spirit, that the top listings, many of which are just copies and the same rock music over and over again!
I've always said that any good "progressive" music collector has to do his/her homework on the ECM label ... and from Terje, there are a couple of things that should be picked up and enjoyed ... and the time and place that it was done is very important, as it is ... amazing to say the least.
EOS - with David Darling, in what is the best Chamber Music set of pieces that you would ever want to hear. Beware the first cut, which is outright a Robert Fripp thing, if there is such a thing ... everyone has a guitar and everyone can do it! But the rest ... well, most "progressive" and "prog" listeners are into their "style" so heavy, that they can not always enjoy weightless music that takes you away. And it helped a film win the Oscar for the Best Foreign Film at one time, which is more than one can say for most of the lounge lizard progressive music out there! ... ohhh btw ... this was done 20 years before Jeff Beck copied it on Roger's album!
ODYSSEY - Double LP at the time. Had some really nice and meandering long cuts. What caught my attention to listening to Terje was that Melody Maker had an advertising for a concert in London for Ash Ra Tempel ... and Terje Rypdal was the other act on it ... and you can rest assured that I was going to check that out! And what a treat!
I have about 6 or 7 other albums and have not listened to them a whole lot to say more about them.
There are a couple of clips of him playing on YouTube with a rock band, and it is not bad, but I am not sure that it shows his abilities to the best use, but they are nice.
Other than that, I can tell you that if I list the Top Ten albums of all time in "progressive" ... that the majority of the listing that we have won't be there ... but EOS will!
Another ECM album must have/listen ... Egberto Gismonti's No Caipira ... an incredible mix of everything and the kitchen sink that does Stravinsky and Villa Lobos proud ... and then Jan Garbarek's Eventyr, whose first piece went along Terje's in the film that won the Oscar.
I think it's all about the innovation in music and the desire to do something else, and new feelings and words and works ... and too much "prog" ... the only thing they have is ... right!
You already know 3 of my top ten! Edited by moshkito - February 04 2011 at 14:45 |

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

I was so happy to get that DVD as I had never seen him live. When I saw it was available and had Vitous and Gurtu, I had to have it. Edited by Slartibartfast - February 04 2011 at 19:40 |

Maybe this will make your frowning poll smiley happy:
My Rypdals are on the top two shelves of the far right wood grain unit: These are what they are: Whenever I Seem To Be Far Away After the Rain Waves Descendre Blue Singles Collection, The Undisonus If Mountains Could Sing Skywards Lux Aeterna Vossabrygg I unfortunately lost a few of my LPs in a house flood that aren't in this collection. They are all new to me except for the one with Vitous and Gurtu as I have the whole DVD. Edited by Slartibartfast - February 05 2011 at 07:05 |

For me, Descendre is his best LP. I love that early Rypdal phase, when ECM was fresh and bold.
Don't take me wrong, Rypdal is still great, but he's LPs, from late 70s and 80s, are something really awesome. It's the same thing with all ECM stars , that times were the best, IMO.

What's really funny is that I reviewed it right after adding it to the correct location and mentioned in my review that it was a joke title. I am right on this am I not? You'd be in the know as it were. Not a high priority or I would have posted in E & O about it. Someone not in the know was just trying to do a little clean up. It is Terje Rypdal's joke - remember at the time of this album's release he was second only to AHa wrt sales in Norway - and AHa's sales were on the basis of singles......... but that is a very loose connection. You're right, TR never released any singles as far as I'm aware - so a mickey-take on those who don't know.

I love that Esoteric Circle LP from around '70 or so on Flying Dutchman. I had a ECM double LP awhile ago that wasn't bad, I forget the name of it. He was sitting on the tailgate of a van on the cover, if I recall correctly.
