I love Peter Gabriel's solo stuff...probably even more than his stuff with Genesis. But I don't see a lot of discussion about it on the site. I would like to know you're 10 favorite solo Gabriel songs. Please don't hate me for being nosy .Mine:
10. Shock the Monkey 9. With This Love 8. The Rhythm of the Heat 7. Digging In the Dirt 6. Sky Blue 5. Family snapshot 4. Red Rain 3. Mercy Street 2. Biko 1. Intruder |

I'm a bit confused. Genesis is such a popular band on this site, and rightly so. But when it comes to their frontman, one of the most colorful stage performers, one of the most creative composers, one of the most innovative artists, and one of the most successful musical pioneers in the history of music....nobody has anything to say. Peter Gabriel and his music are a "one off" experience. There is nothing else like it. And the fact that he has had chart success only makes his story more astounding, because his music, when compared to other music on the charts, was some seriously weird crap!!
Yet his albums get fairly mediocre ratings on here. The threads get largely ignored. It doesn't affect my personal life or anything, but....I just don't don't get it. Gabriel is an "other-worldly" experience...in a good way. His music has "progressed" more than anyone's. Surely that has to be as important and vital as someone singing about knights and playing in pointlessly convoluted time signatures. |

^ I don't either and i appreciate the post.
I think people don't respond to his solo career because it isn't the archetype prog music he was making before. Unfortunately some people can only listen to that stuff or the music that emulates it to the point it's boring. 1. In Your Eyes 2. Sledgehammer 3. No Self-Control 4. Sky Blue (I love the Live version more) 5. The Family and the Fishing Net 6. Signal To Noise 7. Here Comes the Flood (Again, live is better) 8. Red Rain 9. Mercy Street 10. Family Snapshot Close enough.

I agree with the sentiment but do we really need to deride other prog fans? I mean, to 99% of the world everyone on this forum would be labelled a pretentious w**ker. Whether anyone prefers listening to Marillion or whoever over Peter Gabriel, then whatever, good for them. My list would read (almost exclusively live versions of songs) 1. Downside Up 2. Secret World 3. In Your Eyes 4. Solsbury Hill 5. Shaking the Tree 6. Blood Eden 7. Red Rain 8. Across the River 9. Signal to Noise 10. More Than This |

I've always found him hard work. I can cope with an album every 10 years on average. Interestingly I am the only prog reviewer to give his debut 5 stars which perhaps proves a point.
1 Solsbury Hill 2 Modern Love 3 Down The Dolce Vita 4 I Don't Remember 5 Steam 6 On The Air 7 No Self Control 8 Games Without Frontiers 9 Excuse Me 10 Moribund The Burgermeister

Yes, thank you--Down the Dolce Vita !! It's not in my top 10, but close. I thought maybe I was crazy or something for liking it. Thank you for giving me hope for sanity. (My therapist will be shocked, though.)

Good call to include this, I probably wouldn't have thought of it but it is a brilliant version. I can't imagine anyone else doing such a good job of singing SFF.

Good call, I forgot that one!
I wasn't too sure about PG2 when it first came out but have grown to love it over the years.
