Just thought it might be fun/vaguely controversial to have a thread about those songs that you feel really don't hit the mark. Including reasons is helpful, no matter how spurious!

Here's a few off the top of my head.

Jethro Tull - Under Wraps     (Symbolises what went wrong in the eighties, IMO Disco Folk is not a good genre to aim for)

Peter Hammil - Magog         (Why taint a beautiful album by such a random lengthy virtually unlistenable inclusion?)

ELP - Benny the Bouncer     (When the vocals come in, this song it makes me want to cut my ears off)

Pink Floyd - On the run        (I suppose it might have been new at the time, but I have always hated this song for it's lack of ,well, being a song)

Transatlantic - Charlotte Suite Pike    (It takes cheesy to a whole new level)

Dang. Thought this was going to be a thread about songs dealing with catastrophes in some way or another. Was all ready with several songs I like that are either apocalyptic or dealing with some catastrophe or another.
I can understand your anger at me, but what did the horse I rode in on ever do to you?

That thread would interest me.  This negative thread does not.

I like Suite Charlotte Pike.

We...could always...derail this one a wee bit... ...couldn't we?
A negative number was raised to a power that is not an integer.

Alrighty - I'll start us off:

Some of my favorites include
Genesis - Domino (nuclear war)
VDGG - After the Flood (environmental disaster)
Rocket Scientists - Oblivion Days (environmental disaster)
Marillion - Seasons End (environmental disaster)
Jefferson Airplane - House at Pooneil Corners (nuclear war)

and one more, Camel's For Today about 9/11. Or at least inspired by the events of 9/11.

What are some others?

Barclay James Harvest's After The Day has a nice explosion in the end.
The title and the sound of the explosion make me think that it might have something to do with the atomic bomb.

Both excellent songs. You are correct Moogtron III, After the Day was about nuclear war. I thought of another one about the bomb dropping on Hiroshima. Rush - The Manhattan Project.

On The Run works well live with the back projection of someone flying on a bed as Roger Waters did it.

I will just name one track that drags down a classic album

Genesis - Battle Of Epping Forest

some think its clever and satirical but if I wanted 'Monty Python Progressive Rock Band Extraordinaire' I would have asked for one

^ But that's was progressive music is - "music without prejudice", as Steve Hackett once put it. You are either on board with what we are doing as a band or not.

I was starting to list songs based on the thread title.  Sometimes I wish for a little more clarity in thread titles. Angry LOL  You have not hit the mark and you are just going to have to deal with it or revise the title. Big smile

There are plenty of good songs out there about catastrophic events and I see no reason why I should waste my time listening to the bad ones as this is it and we're all going to die!!!

Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

Counting Out Time was much better , more humurous and a whole lot shorter. Musically Epping just lacks and the temptation to play around with silly accents got the better of them imo. I think its a horrible lazy filler of a track but thats just my opinion which is probably sh*t anywayWink

I like the rest of the album hugely and agree with this wholeheartedly. In places BOEF is so bad it approaches 'unwittingly comedic' (but then I adore Benny the Bouncer)

Queen — Delilah.

I have no clue how such a disaster could occur on an otherwise perfect album.
This night wounds time.

I've always liked a few tracks off the Under Wraps album including the title tracks 1 & 2.

The Return of the Giant Hogweed - a particularly silly song that spoils an otherwise delightful album (IMHO)

No way, a brilliant song and a Genesis classic (which is why Hackett is still playing it). And is it any more silly than a song about a man who cuts his toes off and serves them for tea?

^ Agreed. One of the best ever Genesis tracks in my book. Who can resist a song about a vengeful eastern european shrub? (coming over here, taking our jobs...)

Funnily enough, I think my least favourite 'story themed' Gensis track is 'All in a Mouse's Night'. Maybe such tracks need to have a good dose of fantasy (such as menacing shrubs and genetic control regulations) in order to work!
