In the movie Clueless, there is a girl who asks a question to her best friend: why are people always overwhelmed or underwhelmed, but never just "whelmed"?

My question is: why are bands overrated or underrated, and never just "rated", like in a good review?

Not a chance- Camel are one of the greats, in my opinion, and have genuine emotion and feeling in their music, which some take (oddly imo) to be a weakness and call them 'second division'...This annoys me, as their albums are beautifully crafted and performed.

The threads such as "some band is overrated" Or "some band vs. some band" are boring and leads us to nowhere. It doesn't make any sense to start topics like that.

No, why is that while Genesis, Tull, Yes, Pink Floyd were more famous, Camel happened to be in the long run just as influential on the Neo-progressive scene as Genesis.

They had a magical run of great albums, but my all time favorite will always be The Snow Goose

The Album reviews and ratings for Camel area great source of info. I can't say I like all of Camel's music but I would not say overrated. They made great inovations.

Don't be ridiculous.

They are underrated if anything; not everyone gives them their rightful place as the best band of all time.

Now let's stop these bloody silly overrated/underrated threads.

Camel is brilliant, moon madness is a classic.

I think they're a very good band, but nowhere near geniuses. They can't touch stuff like "Close to the Edge," and, as I think one reviewer put it, "The Snow Goose" is lovely, and it is in fact so lovely that you could show it to your grandmother or great-grandmother and she would think it's lovely too. There's no real danger behind it, nothing shocking or particularly new. It's a good band with very competent musicians, and Andy Latimer's prioritization of melody above noodling fingers is what makes that band and makes it sound fresh, but I wouldn't classify them as being one of the best prog bands ever. Not even close.
The crux of the biscuit is the apostrophe.

Camel as influential as Genesis? Let's get serious. I've never
heard a single innovation in the music of Camel (and we gave
them a big chance back in the day, up until Raindance, there
one had to draw the line, and they never delivered), they
always seemed to be comfortably riding in the wake of the
other band's innovations. That said, threads of this nature are
much overrated.

I wish Andy Latimer had joined up with Pink Floyd when Roger Waters left. That would have been my ideal band. Floyd has the power and the glory, Latimer (i.e. Camel) has the melody that later Floyd lacked, and I reckon he would have fitted in perfectly.

Just my 2 minims' worth...

I would also say Camel are to prog what Love are to psychedelia--mixing the best of every influence in a great melting pot and coming out with a lovely, musically perfect concoction.

If you haven't heard Forever Changes, do so.

I bought their "Moodmadness" album from the discount as it had neat covers, and it was recommended by a record shop keeper who knew my prog tastes. As a lunatic I ofcourse fell in  with it immetiuadly. Always on the winter nights, when the sky is clear and the full moon gleams the snowy landscape, I just have to put "Lunar sea" rolling on my turntable.

I had problems geeting into their other albums though. I loaned "Snowgoose" from the library, but I found it boring. My friend has one of their vinyl, where the camel is on a train or something on the album cover, and he played me a nice ballad song from it. I'm also having "Raindances" for me soon, and I'll check out, as it was recommended to my (by snow dog I recall?). But are there any other suggestion, which albums by this overrated () band I should listen?
