Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

Toto cannot be impaired with Styx because the second has some good albums with some prog and some hard-rock songs. Check Styx, Styx II, The Serpent is Rising and Equinox.

hahhaha... Ivan repeats things so many times it gives the appearence that lots of people think that way LOLWink

in all seriousness... I'm sure that is a big reason... how many people here trash music that they in fact actually liked their formative years

No it's not me Marjkos and Micky, lets read some opinions:

Tommy Shaw I believe said he felt like crying when a 10 year old kid said how much he like 'Mr Roboto'. That song is so awful I never bothered with 'Kilroy'.

If I follow I could find many more, this doesn't mean it's bad, only that many people believe it's an horrendous track.

And my dislike is not because it's popular, I still like Come Sail Away and Fooling Yourself which are far more popular, and I found Mr Robotto cheesy since the first listen, almost as bad as Babe.

Markos, is not faiir to comnpare the worst song of STYX (recognized by everybody) with one of Tot0o's hits.

Why don't you compare:

Hold the Line with Fooling Yoursaelf,. Moivement for a Common Man, Crystal Ball, Supérstar, Lights, Boat on the River or even Come Sail Away and it's moog soolo?

For those of you that doubt how progressive Toto is, take a full and engaged listen to their newest album "Falling in Between." Very lush, complex, and in-depth musical compositions!

And as a sidenote, as much as I like Peart, Portnoy, Gadd, Harrison, Collins, etc., I consider Porcaro one of the best (if not the best) drummer that I've ever heard. Technically, the guy was a master who possessed impeccable timing and feel. Donald Fagan of Steely Dan once said that out of all the various drummers they used, Porcaro was the only one who consistently nailed his parts on the first take.

Out of all the musicians who have passed on, I miss Porcaro the most. R.I.P., Jeff.

Agree on everything you have said.  Indeed, Porcaro was a dynamo behind the trap set.  That is why Simon Philips had some big shoes to fill, but I feel he has filled them quite well.  I just wish Toto would let Philips do a solo, something like when he was playing with Jeff Beck on There & Back.  Don't see any of that on Toto 25th anniversary concert DVD (too bad...)

The closest the Porcaro's got to prog was their association with Jon Anderson.  Styx put out a couple of pomp rock albums that came close up on the verge of prog rock.  Neither of them quite made it (although Pieces of Eight is still one of the best albums ever released.)

Well, he's underated from where I am, at leastTongue. Most of the musicians I know, specially drummers, dislike the guy. They say Porcaro is too simplistic and predictable. Oh well.

I would hazard a guess that there's a bit of chauvinism involved due to Porcaro's musical associations. You can't be good if you're in the mainstream, right Wink

Clap.

Well said E.

A highly underrated dummer. I admire his single hand 16-beat pattern on the hi hat.

Thanks, MM; but, I don't think he was underrated at all. While he was alive he was one of the more sought after studio drummers from Boz Scaggs to Madonna. Maybe outside of music's inner circle he's not mentioned a lot; however, within the music industry he was highly regarded as one of the best in the business.

I agree with you regarding his 1/16 notes on the high hat...particularly with only his right hand. What's also not known by all is his 'dancing in the pedals' technique where he could duplicate a double bass pedal with only his right foot. He demonstrates it on his instructional video and it's amazing to watch.

E

Toto is my favorite band so I just CAN'T be objective with them but, frankly, they are as much prog related as, let's say, Iron Maiden or Supertramp. And I know that many prog fans like them and listen to them. Which doesn't know imply that they should be included in this site : I really think that they don't belong here but they are not the only ones, believe me ...
