Les Claypool for technicality and sheer funkyness. Pete Trewavas for melody.

He seems to be very busy, I was surprised to SEE his dextrous fingerwork live and HEAR practcally nothing except a monotone drone.

DT would definitively benefit from a good bass player.
Myung is a great player -live the 6 string does get swamped by Portnoys huge double bass kick drum sound.Maybe playing a 4 string would sound clearer where the B string gets muddied out by the kick drum. I think you are correct in that he gets burried in the mix generally.Systematic Chaos is probably the best bass mix of all DT's albums.

THere are a lot of great bass players today...Hadrien Feraud who plays with John Mclaughlin is probably the best player out there.  Check him out please!  Les Claypool is amazing as well.

Sean Malone, as a musician is my favorite bassist (not that that's his only quality as a bassist, of course!), but I've come to enjoy Colin Edwin's style very much, for some reason, it's very proficient, subtle, careful, yet perfectly in control of his sound...until someone told him to play with a pick LOL

This is why you should let Robin save the day...
