Topic: Favorite Band Posted: February 27 2009 at 19:05 |
If it's based on friendliness and how cool the members are...then it's most certainly going to be a 60's band. I can't imagine anything cooler than chilling with the Grateful Dead. Or Jefferson Airplane, Arthur Brown, or NOT Jim Morrison, as much as I may love the guy.

Judged purely by my favourite music the Beatles would be behind several prog rock bands.
However, the Beatles are clearly my favourite band. Not only was their music brilliant and ground breaking but they meant far more than that to a child growing up in the 60s. They were icons as well as musicians and their legend has continued to grow in the decads since.

Since I knew about them here in PA I think it maybe
Van Der Graaf Generator. I´m enjoying their works
everyday, at home, when driving, shower singing, any
place thinking. Would it be an obsession?

Just found out that John Wesley will be opening for Marillion for the Sunday night show in Montreal at the convention. Actually, from what I've seen, the opening acts don't look too shabby. Still, I'm goin' to see my boys. E

Like Chuck Schuldiner said, "Support music, not rumours". And it's probably true that the music is more important than what the band members personalities are like but hmm... Musically, I'd go with Dream Theater, but actually they seem like very cool guys too (I haven't met them but based on interviews and stuff), so I'd still say Dream Theater. They we're the band that got me into music and still are my favourite. I also love Judas Priest, Opeth, Death, etc. When it comes to personalities btw, I would have assumed (based on Opeth's music) that Åkerfeldt is a very quiet and calm you know, but in all the interviews I've seen and at their show here in Finland he's always telling jokes and seems like a really fun guy.

I've met very few members of bands, but I'm lucky enough to have met Lemmy of Motorhead (and kissed him on the cheek), who was friendly, unassuming and witty. I also briefly met Justin Sullivan from New Model Army, who actually came across as rather shy. I like IQ and Jethro Tull live because they are funny and keep cracking jokes throughout their sets. Somebody I can't stand in music is Axl Rose, what an arrogant knobhead.

Out of my favourite bands I think I'd most enjoy a chat with Alex or Geddy from Rush. Maybe Neil too, but he would probably be so uncomfortable in the situation that I'd feel sorry for disturbing him. Or if I win a meet & greet pass for a Metallica gig next summer I'll probably hook Rob Trujillo up in a Rush conversation, he's a big fan I hear and a very laid back down to earth person.
When I go to smaller gigs I like to compliment the band afterwards and so after seeing Overhead about seven to ten times these past couple of years I've gotten to know them as people quite well, Jaakko and Tarmo mostly. Very nice guys to talk to and have a beer with.

Marillion is my favorite; however, I'd love to sit down and have a beer with the boys of Pendragon. Nick looks like one of the most non-pretentious people out there. Peter Gee and Scott Higham are both men of faith, which I find refreshing in music (especially prog).

I see what you mean. Well, I could see myself having a chat with bandmembers before or after a gig with Pendragon, The Flower Kings or Glass Hammer. They seem very sympathetic to me and they also happen to play excellent music by the way so it would be a party all the way then.
But I couldn't see myself doing the same thing with Dream Theater or Pink Floyd to name a few. Even though I like their music. I'm not saying they are *ss h*les or something, just less approchable.

. . . although there IS that story where Peter Banks says that Steve Howe wouldn't let him guest perform during the 'Union' tour . . .
. . Honestly, not to state the obvious here, but EVERY band has a member or two who becomes arse-hole-ish at one point or another. They are human, after all.

Well, Tool is my favorite band in terms of their music, but I hear that they are donkey-holes in person, so I guess that means that Pink Floyd comes next-- oh, wait . . . there is Roger Waters . . . .
Hmm . . . The Yes guys seem to be quite friendly, so I guess they are the next pick.
