There's an early '80's Moraz solo effort called Timecode that might be worth investigating.

Is the George Duke stuff anything like his stuff with Zappa?
There are a few things on "Feel" which come close (Zappa actually appears on that album but under an alias Obdewl'l X.  Those things are closer to the type of stuff found on "Waka/Jawaka" & "The Grand Wazoo".  Mostly Duke's solo albums imprint his own style and sound.  Although  for a brief period he adopted the "P-Funk" sound of George Clinton on a couple of releases.

Stormbringer and Come Taste the Band are fantastic soul/funky rock albums, though not Prog.

Also, besides the albums I already recommended you, Jeff, I'm curious about your thoughts on this:

and on this:

I really loved the first song. The second song didn't grab me as much, but it was good nonetheless. I might have to check out some Return To Forever Big smile. Which album is the first song off of?

'free your mind and your ass will follow' is even better.

I am surprised no one mentioned Embryo :

And what about Curt Cress Clan with drummer extraordinaire Curt Cress (later with Saga) on drums :

Not sure that counts but there is also some excellent funky punk :
