Okay, proggers, or however someone may think of oneself, how about moving forward and after the classics

(mostly from the '70s) put some more focus on the '80s. I think that will be quite interesting, as well.

So beginning with some of my Prog Rock favourites, one album per band and unranked:

Agnus  (ARG)  -  Pinturas Y Expresiones   (1980)

Asia Minor  (TRK/F)  -  Between Flash And Divine   (1980)

Bacamarte  (BRA)  -  Depois Do Fim   (1983)

Bi Kyo Ran  (J)  -  Bi Kyo Ran   (1982)

Crimson Glory  (USA)  -  “Crimson Glory”  (1986)

Djam Karet  (USA)  -  Reflections From The Firepool   (1989)

 Eskaton  (F)  -  4 Visions   (1979, 1981)

Fates Warning  (USA)  -  The Spectre Within  (1985)

The “Gunesh” Ensemble (USSR)  -  Looking At The Earth   (1984)

Halloween  (F)  -  Part One  (1988)

Iconoclasta  (Mex)   -  Reminiscencias   (1985)

Los Jaivas (Chile)  -  Alturas de Machu Pichu   (1981)

Marillion  (UK)  -  Script For A Jester’s Tear   (1983)

P.L.J. Band  (Gre)  -  Armageddon   (1982)

Solaris  (HUN)  -  Marsbeli Kronikak   (1984)

Some additional:

Collegium Musicum  (TCH)  -  Divergences   (1983)

Agamemnon  (CH)  -  Agamemnon, Part I&II   (1981)

Pendragon  (UK)   -  The Jewel   (1985)

And I hope, you'll enjoy it, and all the best to all of you, guys! Tongue

I'm a bit suprised, though, why you just didn't edit your original post. Ermm

I must confess that in the 80's, I was very far away from any Prog. I certainly did worship music, but that was allmost only mainstream Rock, and even some of Pop-Rock. I heard a bit of Marillion, but it at least didn't tell me enough. I bought Powerslave (1984) and listened to that album a number of times, but it didn't bring me to more Metal, and thus neither to the beginning Prog Metal in the second half of the 80's.

So the 80's were a long break for me from the realm of Progressive Rock, and actually I first began get into the 80's Prog about 20 years ago. Today, I certainly find some of it interesting and good, even in general not as good as what I'm most fond of from the 70's. Smile

As a collection of 15 this beats every other decade in my book.

King Crimson - Discipline (I love the whole early 80s trilogy)
Kate Bush - The Dreaming (and albums around it)
Camberwell Now - The Ghost Trade
Talk Talk - The Colour of Spring (and Spirit of Eden, couldn't really decide between them)
Brian Eno & David Byrne - My Life in the Bush of Ghosts
David Sylvian - Brilliant Trees (and Secrets of the Beehive)
Cardiacs - A Little Man and a House and the Whole World Window (and On Land and in the Sea)
Art Zoyd - Berlin (and all others from the 80s)
Peter Hammill - Patience
Tangerine Dream - Tangram
Bill Bruford's Earthworks - Earthworks
Robert Fripp - The League of Gentlemen
Univers Zero - Ceux du Dehors (& Heatwave & Uzed)
Renaissance - Camera Camera
Irmin Schmidt - Filmmusik Vol. 3 & 4

Should really also make the list:
This Heat, Dun, Eskaton, Dead Can Dance, Talking Heads, Kraftwerk, Zamla Mammaz Manna, Thinking Plague

Some albums I still like a lot from artists who did better work in other decades:
Holger Czukay - On the Way to the Peak of Normal
Camel - Stationary Traveller
Mike Oldfield - Crises
Pierre Moerlen's Gong - Second Wind
Jethro Tull - The Broadsword and the Beast
Amon Duul II - Vortex
Can - Delay 1968 (really very good, but then not really an 80s album)

I really struggled to come up with 15 albums (one/band). I know I've missed and ignored many essentials from this decade. I don't consider all on my list prog, but since they're in PA database, why not.

Captain Beefheart - Doc at the Radar Station
Coil - Horse Rotorvator
Current 93 - Swastikas for Noddy
Peter Hammill - A Black Box
Hawkwind - Levitation
King Crimson - Discipline
Kraftwerk - Computerwelt
Marillion - Fugazi
Mike Oldfield - Five Miles Out
Osiris - Osiris
Jean-Paul Prat - Masal
Residents - The King & Eye
Rush - Moving Pictures
Throbbing Gristle - Heathen Earth
Zamla Mammaz Manna - Familjesprickor

Well, I had thought skimming my lists that I would cite the other Chilean group Congreso at least once, but apparently I rated their 80's album none higher than 10. Just checked and it is the case with their 70's albums.
The difference between a Gnosis 11 (B+) and 9 (B-) are:
11: Excellent. While not a classic, an album that is very enjoyable and an important part of ones collection. We recommend that raters not give grades higher than 11 on the very first listen.

10: Very good. An album that, while not great, is definitely worth keeping and is very enjoyable.

9: Pretty good. While an album better than most, one may or may not keep an album with a rating of 9.

=================

Those of us who use Gnosis (the first numbers in most of my lists are the Gnosis rating scale) as a reference for the year of release often make mistakes in lists (I've made a couple of them throughout the years), but I'm pretty sure that

There's more than one on my list about which this has been said... I said this before, ultimately crossing boundaries is an essential element of prog (or at least my idea of it), and this means that defining and delimiting it is always to some extent paradoxical.

Right, I got it confirmed on Discogs as a label information on the original release (Depósito Legal: BI-805-1979) - thanks.

It's a pity, though, as my 80's have lost one of their most beautifull pearls, and my 70's have got even richer. Disapprove

Now the practician in me is better to be stronger than the theoretician, so I won't comment you here, Lewian - but it would be a nice, little challenge to present my own, different point of view in this question in a more adequate way than I did before, and as an answer to what you precisely write here. Wink

82 Step Ahead- Step Ahead

85 Marillion- Misplaced Childhood
     IQ- The Wake
86 Univers Zero- Heatwave
    Fates Warning- Awaken The Guardian
Shub Niggurath- Les Morts Vont Vite
87 David Torn- Cloud About Mercury
88 Iron Maiden- Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son
89 Fates Warning- Perfect Symmentry
     Marillion- Seasons End

I did this list sometime last year and sorry that I've got 25 and there are prog related ones but for me the first three years of the 80's are just so nostalgic so some picks here go beyond the music to a time and often places. Those included in this are Rush, Black Sabbath, Genesis and Iron Maiden but that Fates Warning album from 89 is what got me into Prog so it's special but really good besides that and I've gotten comments about it. Pretty much everything else I discovered way later after finding out about our adventerous music

I don't think I can possibly put this in any order, so I'll just wing it here:

King Crimson - Discipline
Rush - Permanent Waves
Rush - Grace Under Pressure
Marillion - Misplaced Childhood
Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime
Voivod - Dimension Hatross
Voivod - Killing Technology
Yes - Drama
King's X - Gretchen Goes to Nebraska
Fates Warning - Perfect Symmetry
Ozric Tentacles - Pungent Effulgent
Univers Zero - Heatwave
Saga - Worlds Apart
Kansas - Audio Visions
Metallica - ...And Justice for All

I was gonna include Moving Pictures as well, but I wanted a little more variety in the list instead of just filling it with Rush albums LOL
