I think they are all superb musicians.I always thought Steve Lukather was a very underrated guitarist.

Overproduced supergroup....talented musicians making streamlined pop-rock with at times arty, jazzy and even funky undertones. Not my taste but not all that bad. ------------- I like to feel the suspense when you're certain you know I am there..... |

Toto is pop at it's most advanced. I love it! All excellent musicians. -------------

Jazz rock?? Nope- there is a jazz influence in their work, but unless Steely Dan are your idea of jazz rock (who Toto sound considerably like, imo) I can't see it. Certainly not amongst bands like Mahavishnu Orchestra, Soft Machine, Return To Forever etc. that are in that category here.
In fact, Toto are a band I can't even see as prog related. Even the one often pointed to as being prog, 'Hydra', wasn't imo. Pure AOR, but one of the best bands of the genre, imo.

 As a matter of fact, in the Non-Prog section there is a Toto poll, in which I was severely reprimanded by an newbie because I reacted strongly to the suggestion of adding Toto to the PA database. He mentioned to me some songs, telling me they were strongly prog-related ... pity that I knew at least one of them, and could see no relation at all! |

I only know Toto from their typical Pop songs and the album Mindfields. I must say that I really enjoy listening to it, and it includes an interesting mix of genres and a slight touch of prog. BTW: I once started a detailed Toto poll ... but I can't find it anymore. The search function seems to be quite unreliable ... | The Search function sometimes behaves oddly, as I have experienced myself when looking for duplicate threads. There are lots of bugs around, but most of them can only fixed by Max. We often bring such matters up in the Admin section, and he tries to do what he can about it. I'll try to get his attention on this too. |

I saw that GR- don't worry, it's nonsense. 'Hydra' and 'St George and the Dragon' aren't prog imo- I can't see how you could see any prog there. Some just want their favourite bands in the archives!!

On that basis, I'd have to say a resounding "NO!" -- just the kind of super-slick, safe, predictable pop pap that I always turned off. I don't think I've ever liked any of their stuff.
 Plus, Zappa made fun of them (Toado)....
As I've often said, "progressive" is such a slippery term, and not, I think, to be interpreted in a literal, dictionary sense. There's TONS of slick, smart, very well done pop out there (Steely Dan, Paul Simon, Sting, The Blue Nile, Prefab Sprout, XTC, etc, etc, etc. -- the list would be HUGE) that is the product of intelligent, talented musicians and top notch studio craft. -- but it's not "progressive rock," at least not according to how I and most other long-term prog fans understand the term.
We can't just make "prog" synonymous with "better than average," "something else some prog fans like," or "good" (an even more subjective term). If we did, practically all forms of music -- blues, bluegrass, country, hip hop, soul, etc, would need to be included here with the prefix "prog" tacked on to them. I imagine there are 'bad," "average" "good" and "great" examples of all genres, but substituting the word "prog" for "good" is not valid, IMO.
 It's hard to express, but I thing "prog" implies a certain degree of musical daring, "difficulty" or, well, "weirdness."
Toto sounds very average, or normal, to me -- there is no "challenge" to me there, or to radio programmers -- thus their ubiquitous presence on mainstream radio. ------------- "And, has thou slain the Jabberwock?
