Whao I don't how it happened but it.!! I am a prog-metal Fan!!! from a hardcore 70's prog/fusion/jazz fan to prog-metal.!! and I hate Mainstream Metal Bands.
any way the subject is to select the best prog-metal vocalist and why?
I am a big Tool and Maynard has always been my fav vocalist from this kind of music, However I have been listening to Symphony discography ( avery underrated band here!!) lately and Russell Allen slowly, but shortly is becoming my favorite vocalist for the several reasons:
He can sing:
extremely hard and harsh like mikael from (Opeth)
beautifully soft and calm as (Steve Wilson and Phil Collins)
and extremely powerful as (Maynard and Peter Gabriel)
and he is never annoying even when he scream as we all know who that is!
He is awesome,!!!
and your? and Why?
Also all those vocalist on the list are extremly good so it was a hard choice to make.

A tough decision between Maynard, Daniel and Mikael.
Still, it has to be Akerfeldt.
Truly excellent, masterful vocal performances by him. He's got a beautiful clean voice and death-metal vocals superior to most. Actually, in my oppinion, his singing-voice is superior to all others (all that I have come to hear).

I went with Daniel Gildenlow, even though there were many great choices (Akerfeldt, Allen, and Duda). Daniel has an extremely powerful voice, but he can also be amazing soft. His dynamic range and his pitch range are both amazing, and make the music very emotional and interesting. Plus the lyrics he writes are perfect, and even better, he sings with the same emotion as the lyrics convey, making the delicate parts even more delicate and the heavy parts full of anger and emotion.
Akerfelt I love too for the dynamics, and because his voice is quite purdy (pretty). Russel Allen also has a powerful voice but can also do the whole choir thing which is amazing. Lastly, Duda has great tone and is just a great singer.

Maynard, for no other reason than I simply like listening to him more so than the others. There's something about his voice that's so unique, unlike for example LaBrie and the legions of prog-metal vocalists who are nearly indistinguishable from him.
Mikael Akerfeldt is a strong #2 for me.

The name of that dude is Geoff Tate. If this vote was to be cast back in the 90's, he would have won my vote.
At this century, I'd have to go for Neal Morse and Gildenlow. I liked Labrie a lot from Images and Words and Awake, but IMHO his more recent works have been less passionate. Also loved Jon Oliva (Savatage / TSO). Amazing power.

I really can't understand how anyone could NOT pick Russell Allen. This guy covers all bases of Progmetal vocals, both the softer, well controlled side, as well as the raspy, guttural screams. When he sings, I mean really sings, the smoothness of his voice can bring chills. He handles his vibrato very well. Some of the other guys just can't compete. When he sang with Jorn Lande, Allen's voice just was the obvious better one, and Lorde has a great voice too.
This guy's voice is the complete package.

Cool.
And one song I think defines his abilities, because I always get chills...Candlelight Fantasia. Those high notes at the end of the song spank LaCheese's anyday.
I'd like to hear Maynard sing like that...wait....no I wouldn't. It would be scary. (Don't get your panties in a wad Tool fans, I like Maynard quite a bit but his style is, well, not a great singers style.)

As a former DT fan turned into a DT basher, I must admit that Labrie's performance on Systematic Chaos is quite good. He stopped sighing and using his vibrato too much, he sounds more natural when singing angrily, he stopped going in the high registry when it's uncalled for... For the first time in a long while he doesn't sound like he's trying too hard, he's just more natural and it shows.
In fact, this album is turning me back into a DT fan !

Seriously, have you heard it ?
Not only is Labrie better, but there is less musical w**kery on SC, and when there is some, it's well integrated into the song structures, they didn't build patterns for the sole purpose of w**king around...
Also, I find that the poppier songs (Forsaken and Prophets of War, the latter being an homage to Muse) are the best they've done so far.
My girlfriend, who always disliked DT very much, said "Well, in my face... This may be the first DT album I'll pick from the shelf and play by myself, and undoubtlessly my favorite."
They hit the spot this time, what can I say ? It's not a masterpiece by any means, but it is my favorite ever since Rudess joined the band.

I have stayed away from it after watching one of the clips on YouTube. Portnoy trying to sing really bugs me anymore.
Not that I ever really had a big problem with LaBrie, the other guys covering their solos with solos with a sprinkling of solos has been the biggest annoyance. And it seems Portnoy wants to sing more, which is just sad.
But based on what you say, perhaps I will look find a copy to sample before purchasing. I won't spend money on it if I think its more musician spooge.
Your opinion does help sell it though.

Just a hint : the first song features a bit of high speed noodling in the beginning, but it is short, so don't be annoyed too much by it. I also have to say that Petrucci's solos are better constructed this time around, starting slowly (hey he can actually stretch notes and play with feel, I forgot he could do it) and building up until he explodes. Myung's bass sounds really good, Rudess' playing is more integrated with the band, and Portnoy's voice doesn't annoy me at all.
Gotta love Repentance, very moody song, touching without being cheesy...
I NEVER thought I would actually enjoy another DT album, believe me... Give it a few spins !

I don't understand all the hype about Tool. Their vocalist just does not impress me in the least. Listen to La Brie's range. Fish's efforts in old Marillion. Queensryche's vocalist (name escapes me now), the same with Pain of Salvation. Tool's vocalist is eclipsed by most of the Grunge rock singers, how could he begin to compete with the likes of those mentioned above who's voices are instruments in there own right.

Gildenlow. For the sheer complexity, depth, range and emotion he puts into music. I'm not rating LaBrie's voice as high as I used to in the past, and Arkefeldt is good, but on a different level than Daniel. I care little for the rest, though I'm familiar with all of them.

I love nearly all the rest, but Duda is the best (IMHO) if you thinf only in vocals. I´m waiting anxiously the third part of the Reality Dream Trilogy by Riverside (Rapid Eye Movement), this year 2007.
P.S. If the topic had been music skill in general, I would have said Akerfeldt.

I don't understand all the hype about Tool. Their vocalist just does not impress me in the least. Listen to La Brie's range. Fish's efforts in old Marillion. Queensryche's vocalist (name escapes me now), the same with Pain of Salvation. Tool's vocalist is eclipsed by most of the Grunge rock singers, how could he begin to compete with the likes of those mentioned above who's voices are instruments in there own right. |
well buddy sad to say but that is simply you lame personal opinion. There are thousands of people that think other wise. I am one those I love the guy lyrics and voice.

2. Maynard |
How can someone's opinion be lame ??? IT'S AN OPINION !

Ray Alder, ex Fates Warning current Redemption singer is very good IMO. Not on this list though. For this one Acker gets it for soul and range. Love Russels' voice though and James La brie has definitely improved in recent years.

Not the greatest, but worthy of a mention: Damian Wilson (Threshold/Star One/Ayreon) Glynn Morgan (Threshold) and of course, Andrew (Mac) McDermott (Threshold)

Mikael Akerfeldt: Beauty/Beast.
Russell Allen: Powerful and beautiful.
Daniel Gildenlöw: Versatile and emotional.
Maynard James Keenan: Freak
Mike Baker: Dramatic
James LaBrie: Sometimes emotional
I'm a Opeth fanboy so my vote goes to Mikael Akerfeldt
Praise Mikael!!!

Agree 100% with Wilson (he's a master for me), McDermott (he's good, very very good, perfect for The Hold), but not with Glynn Morgan (man, his performance in Psychodelicatessen is atrocious...Maybe the songs aren't helping any, but it quite....sucks ).

Keenan: Good angst singer, good for Tool's music, I don't know outside Toll how good his voice could be, I don't see him singing other styles.
Kuntz: A decent voice for metal but at times too... hairy? The voice is great, but there's a tone to it that reminds me of Motley Crue, and that sends shivers down my spine...
Duda: good voice, actually very good, but not incredibly original.
GILDENLOW: A fantastic singer, for me one of the best in the list, capable of emotion, anger, love, falsetto, screaming, yelling, nu, great.
Allen: great, powerful, lacking in the melody department, though he can do it. Just the band, it appears, has forgotten that part of music as of lately.
Baker: This is a master of the vocals but his voice also reminds me of the hair era, at times. He's great, though.
Akerfeldt: His "clean" voice isn't technically perfect or anything but it's effective, mostly when combined (and in contrast with) his excellent growling, one of the best.
LABRIE: THE VOICE OF PROG METAL.

From the list: LaBrie
But overall: Jorn Lande,
because of his sheer power, vocal range and lots and lots of contributions to a wide range of prog metal albums.

The best prog-metal singers are all from nordic countries: Lande, Khan and Åkerfeldt!
Did I mention I have both norwegian and swedish blood in me?

Tough poll...for me it was a toss up between Mariusz Duda and Keenan. Duda's voice has really been growing on me as of late though, and his vocal style is a lot lighter (although it can get angry) than Keenan's...to be perfectly honest, I can only listen to Tool/Perfect Circle in limited doses, Keenan tends to get me severly depressed

Maynard - Tied for my avourite with Mikael Akerfeldt Andy Kuntz - Haven't heard him but he has a funny last name Mariusz Duda - One of my favourites, plus he's Polish and so am I. Daniel Gildenlow - Again one of my favourites, i love his energy. Russel Allen - Meh. Nothing Special Mike Baker - Again, not that great James LaBrie - Good sometimes, but often makes me want to strangle him. Alex Katsiyannis - Haven't heard him Mikael Akerfeldt - Tied with Maynard. Also posesses the best Death Metal vocals(although Mariusz Duda would beat him if he did them more i think)

although I'm not a fan of growling, I have to admit that Mickael Akerfeldt has an amazing vocal talent. He has a great voice and deffinately has quite a grunt/growl/scream. I'm not a fan of his but I stil admit he's good.
Russell Allen is good, but I've heard better. James LaBrie - no comment. Andy Kuntz is ok but nothing special. Maynard isn't all that great in my opinion. He gets really old really quick. Daniel Gildenlow is really good and I would say the best on this list of options. He has such a great voice. Just listen to the song "Chainsling" off the album Remedy Lane. From high to low, heavy screams to soft and elegant, this guy does it all. Mariusz Duda is pretty good and on this list I would list him as #2. He has a great range and alot of talent.
However my favorite prog metal singer is Roy Khan of Kamelot. His vocals are the best I have ever heard in my life. I don't listen to the band anymore because of their religious views because I just recently became a Christian and I try to stay away from anything satanic in nature. But I still consider them to be the best Melodic Prog Metal band ever.
My second favorite singer is Eric Clayton from the band Saviour Machine. They aren't very popular or well known, but the band is awesome. He has a deep almost operetic voice with alot of feeling. He also played the voice of Reason on the album "Human Equation" by Ayreon.

I love Eric Clayton! I find his vocals very emotionally charged, almost too much sometimes. I can only listen to Saviour Machine in limited doses as their music is very heavy. I thought that sounded like Clayton on Human Equation, but I kept telling myself "no way!"
Love Khan's vocals, but you're right, the lyrics are very dark.
