I don't think you should call these lists "jazz metal". Some of the groups could be classified as such, but even as a generalization, it's just too much of a poor description. You've got a mix of tech, progressive, and jazz-metal bands in there.
Maybe i'm nitpicking though

Anyway, for this poll i'll have to vote Cynic. There are some impressive bands up there, but Cynic outshines them all.

The vote goes for Cynic it seems, but I will go for Ephel Duath.  The Painter's Palette is one of my favourite albums.  The mixing of extreme and clean vocals was amazing, as well as the overall musicianship., Unfortunately the clean vocals were missing in Pain Necessary To Know.

Mark, almost all of the bands in this list are in the archives(quite a few added by the ever hard-working PMT ClapEmbarrassed),so this can go in Prog Polls.

I would have a hard time choosing if Cynic wasn't on the list, but Cynic practically invented this type of music, and is the ONLY choice.

Cynic definitely. Why isn't Atheist an option? Together, these two bands were really the first to blend jazz and extreme metal, which resulted in the death metal scene leaping forward in sophistication. Without these two bands, it's unlikely that even the mighty Death would have started making jazz death gems like Human and their magnum opus Sound of Perserverance.

I know Cynic are are thought of as jazz metal but that's always seemed odd to me in that they don't really incorporate jazz into the equasion except in the most tangential way.   As well, Don Cab is Math Rock through and through, and Behold the Arctopus is Extreme-Tech. The artists that truly fuse jazz elements and metal would be Counter-World Experience, Planet X, and Sleep Terror among others.

Yeah, it was kind of interesting; mentioned Zappa and that dude from the Mahavishnu Orchestra (John MacLongawang or whatever), but no mention of Bobby Fripp! I find that criminal, since the phrase was "heavy metal jazz" was invented for the mid seventies Crimso period.

Actually, I invented the phrase to describe Ian Anderson's flute, but I digress. Here's a link:

I think many of these bands more as technical prog, math metal, whatever, but not really as much jazz metal (there are a few though).  When I think of Jazz Metal, I think of Planet X.

One of the bands on the list is as close to jazz/metal as you can get without being named Cynic, and it's the instrumental outfit Continuo Renacer.

Check them out guys,AWESOME STUFF!!!!!!!!

I don't  think Planet X is central to this sub genre of jazz rock fusion, however, they are within the accepted boundaries. Agree with others that some of the bands named are on the basis of extremely liberal interpretations - I bought a Spiral Archetectural album on the basis of a previous thread on this subject, and still trying to spot the jazz - above average guitarwork doesn't necessarily equate to jazz: do they improv? Instead I see reference points being for instance Panzerballett, Heavy Metal Jazz Concepts, Shaun Baxter, Jonas Hellborg's e and No Other World projects, a lot  of Niacin, some of Gongzilla (e.g. their second album with Gary Husband providing to heavy edge), some of Firemerchants (several tracks on Landlords of Atlantis), Conrad Schrenk's Extravanganza, Steve Clarke's Network. Alkemy, Liquid Tension Experiment makes it too. On the basis of the recent live Jazz Pistols' album , I hear them as mainstream jazz rock fusion, and not particularly heavy nor metally.

Obviously ;-) WatchTower, Pioneers and fantastic, extremely unique musicians and great songwriting - and very techy but catchy, like "The Fall of Reason" or "Control and Resistance", I love how far they really are away from regular "heavy metal riffing" in most of their songs. It's just too bad that they still haven't made "Mathmatics", although Spastic Ink and Ron Jarzombeks solo stuff is great to bridge the time.

Ya, I'll agree with that....except I haven't heard of many of the bands you talked about (that may be the problem).  The only bands I've really listened to here are Spiral Architect (not Jazz), Meshuggah (I guess some jazzy solos),  LTE (jazz), and some others, but not those you discussed.  Planet X is just what comes to my head because of the large amount of jazz I hear there and because it is metal.

Canadian band Karcius surely has a lot of metal, a jazzier version of Planet X IMO.

Meshuggah as Jazz-Metal? I really find it hard. LTE comes close because they do improvise and show some jazzy harmonic work (not as much as it is required but it's an acceptable amount),

I think that is a problem, the lack of familiarity with  the 'wealth' of bands that are thought to fit into this category.  As we pull band names out of the hat, some/many will be unknown to others. in part, such  threads can provide a service i.e.  recommendations of bands/albums. While we shouldn't get too carried away by categorisation,  there is clearly a need for some consistency, for instance we seem to agree about lack of jazz in Spiral Architecture - hence inclusion under a list of metal jazz bands is doing a disservice to those using the list as a reference to expand their collection of metal jazz. Hence my list of what I hear as heavy jazz rock with a metal edge - "jazz" being a pretty important requirement here.

Yeah gotta give props to the first ever prog metal band, it's not particularly jazzy though, just technical.

Also you guys should check out nekropsi, really good clean (for the most part) instrumental jazz/metal hybrid, really interesting stuff.

Hm, I don't jazz-metal exists really, there're all technical metal bands, be it melodic, dissonant, etc.

I don't know what happens, but when a metal bands turns up the volume of the bass guitar everyone thinks that's jazz and even fusion, metal is far far away from jazz, note that, is it jazz or metal, one at the time and never both.

When I first heard that album, I thought it was going to be better, or at least jazzy, but in reality it's not even close, it's again technical, complex, dissonant, some times melodic, kind of experimental, it's metal and evidently for meshuggah fans only

And please, let's not confuse good metal musicianship with jazz, those things are totally opposite in every sense.

ATHEIST were a sort of progressive techno-thrash metal band who released three fantastic albums between 1989 and 1993. Their second release "Unquestionable Presence" (1991) is maybe one of the most technical albums ever recorded by an heavy-metal band. "Elements" (1993) is an incredible album, characterised by pyrotechnician fusion lashes!!!

I don't see why Cynic is winning. Focus is the best jazz metal of all time, but I think people are not look at bands in a whole. It has only been one album. Meshuggah gets my vote.

Got to be Watchtower follow closely by Spiral Architect and Spastik Ink, trully amazing bands, they play a complex metal with jazzy influence and the result is a fantastic one, not boring just chalenging for every serious listner.
