Complete no contest for me - GG!
One of the best 70s prog bands versus one of the worst.
But I bet the VDGG fanboys swing it for them.

Look at the results of the GG vs Rush poll - the GG fanboys (including myself) are out in force. GG is the clear favourite IMO.

Both bands are more than superb, so they're here for a reason. GG do well with the really complex arrangements, is one of my introductory bands of the genre, and I enjoy their music like the firsts days. I can't stop being impressed by the musical creativity of these guys. But VDGG is possibly my all time favorite band, so here is it.

well, I went with VDGG, no surprises there.
I've now got 4 GG albums, and I think all of them are solid, interesting four star efforts. On the other hand, I love basically every VDGG record from H To He through to The Quiet Zone, and they hold 4 of my top 10 albums... so, not hard for me.
Anyway, nice to see a final like this.

Neither band even existed fo me until a few years ago. I find Gentle Giant to sound dated, but they are OK. VDGG have yet to click with me after 5 albums from them, but there is always that elusive next album that will do the trick. Since that hasn't happened yet, my vote goes for Rush; err, I mean Gentle Giant.

This is not as difficult as it seems for me. Gentle Giant are one of the most original and fascinating bands of progressive rock, but Van der Graaf Generator is to me just so incredibly atmospheric. If I decided with my judgement based on the capability of musicians I would have to vote Gentle Giant (that does not men that Hammill and co are bad, Gentle Giant are just exceptional!), Van der Graaf Generator on the other hand has the atmosphere. Does not sound like a good reason, however, in the end the sound matters.

Gentle Giant, since they have an intensely interesting blend of styles, know how to make that mix work and present it with nearly unmatched compositional and technical skill as opposed to the other contestant's often grating convulsions of explosive emotionality and somehow "naked", exposed sound. Now, that is good from time to time, but GG are just way more solid and enjoyable in the long run.

I had a feeling it was coming down to VdGG and GG. I think overall i prefer VdGG because of the darker atmosphere and Hammill's lyrics are amazing. It's hard to vote against GG though.

already vote for VdGG... the ultimate band... just came back saturday night and still VdGG is ahead of one vote left today at 20/20... THISISTHEBIGGESTSURPRISE of that pole... just see VdGG in finale is a win... GG is a top band like older yes and genesis and floyd... and tull... but they got it all... music... feeling... lyrics... hard playing... hard soft moods... what a band!... I don't care if GG win, i love them... they could easily... but just seiing VdGG as far as here... is just good for prog!

VDGG-GG 38-37: a fine opportunity to draw the score equal. I love Godbluff and Still Life, both masterpieces, but GG maintained a constant high quality from Acquiring the Taste to Free Hand, and Playing the Fool is one of the best live albums ever. I this case I have to vote for GG.

I'd label GG progressive rock, and VDGG progressive rock.
I can't say that many bands have done half as much in terms of progression while staying so distinctly in their own style. Never heard anything like Killer or Sleepwalkers before.

I just broke the tie and had to go with VDGG, now if the same question was posed to me when I first started getting into Prog, I would have voted GG...that super complex multifaceted Prog was what I was after and GG was direct hit square in my face, now I still love GG and would consider them on of my favorite bands, but the emotional impact VDGG has on me is so overwhelming, they're much more subtle and deep, the brooding nature of VDGG has grown stronger with me each year....it just seems that the mood VDGG creates is so much more appropriate for these fatalistic times,

Fanboy sneaks in to tip the scales a little further 54-51. Try as I might, still not getting VdGG yet, despite many (sometimes painful) tries. GG took a few tries too, but once I got it, what a group of musicians. Nothing exists like them today.

Man I ve started getting into Gentle Giant , and what a band! Their first 7 albums are flawless. Cant wait to hear playing the fool.
Also I like the fact that their records are mostly 35 mins long but they are full of prog. The Flower Kings should learn from them.
That being said I voted for VDGG since they are an old time favourite , but if this month would have been made in 3 month from now I couldn't made up my mind.

I actually think there are a lot of similarities between both bands. Take for example the way they structure their riffs. Just listen to the riff in the mid-section of VdGG's "Scorched Earth". This might as well be a riff of Gentle Giant and isnot very much unlike the riff in "Giant", although they are by far not the same riffs. I actually think many riffs of VdGG would work very well in a GG context and vice versa.

More votes will come in. If the votes do not change at all over the span of a few days, then I will consider that.
I'd rather not call the final match a draw though.

I say you let the poll end precisely a week after its beginning.

When the score is equal exactly one week after the start you may consider a tie break: the first to get a vote wins...

What about both bands in the same tour for the
penalty kick?

It should count for 2. As the webmaster can't you change it to make your vote count for even more than that?

I say let this thing run as long as it's got steam. It's interesting.

If this poll ends with a tie I suggest an Arbitrator: Chris Judge Smith

I said the VDGG fanboys would stop at nothing. I simply can't be bothered to lobby for GG - it's only a poll, for God's sake
I just actually listened to Godbluff (I keep it in my Cupboard of S**t - where I keep albums I bought on an impulse and immediately deeply regretted). Yep, it's still as bad as I remember! I do enjoy bits of Sleepwalkers, but that's it.

So do you actually collect the stuff and keep it in a cupboard?
That's a tad disturbed.
And The Generator takes the lead. Although, I love both bands, so whoever wins this I won't be too heartbroken. Glad to see two of my favorite bands made it this far.

I think I deserve ten votes.
By the way, what if you called it as soon as the difference was say, four votes?

I was thinking of something along those lines.
I guess I'll just see how the votes come in over the next 24-72 hours.

Anyway I'd eagerly buy a t-shirt of Gentle Giant too
