Hi, I was just wondering if you would be willing to fill out a short survey about progressive rock. I hope this isn't considered spamming or anything of that nature; if it is, I'm sorry. I just needed a place where I could survey a bunch of prog fans, and this seemed to be the best place to do it. For this survey, I want you to imagine your perfect album. This doesn't have to be a real album or even necessarily a prog album. Just imagine what the ideal album would be in your mind, and then answer some questions related to it. The questions are multiple choice, but feel free to elaborate if you so desire. Be honest, for my benefit. There are no right or wrong answers. Just copy and paste the survey into your reply and bold the chosen answer. Thank you very much for your time.

Considering your ideal album:

Album Length:
Under 40 minutes
40-50 minutes
50-60 minutes
60-70 minutes
70-80 minutes

Concept Album?:
Full concept album (plot, characters, etc.)
Slightly conceptual (songs have common themes, but not in story form)
No concept (songs have no intentional connecting theme)

Motifs:
There should be melodies/lyrics shared across songs
Songs should be unique and not reference each other

Mood of the music:
Happy, upbeat, humorous
Sad, dark, depressing
A mix of positive and negative moods

Average Song Length:
3-5 minutes
5-7 minutes
7-10 minutes
10+ minutes

Should there be a 15+ minute song?
Yes
No

Lyrics:
None (Instrumental music and/or wordless vocalizations such as humming)
Lyrical singing, but also some purely instrumental songs
All songs should have lyrics

Guitars or Keyboards?:
No keys
Keys, but guitar dominated
Even split between keys and guitars
Guitar, but keyboard dominated
No guitars

Sound:
Minimalistic, not too many instruments at once, sparse instrumentation
Dense, dissonant, many different instruments playing different, often clashing, parts at once
A happy medium between the two

Structure of individual songs:
Verse-chorus-verse structure
Largely verse-chorus-verse, but with occasional deviations
Largely unstructured, but with repeating sections or melodies throughout
Little to no structure or repetition

Live or CD?:
The spontaneity and atmosphere (rawness) of a live concert
The perfection and studio tricks of the studio recording

Structure of album:
All songs should lead directly into the next
Some songs can, but not good if the whole album is connected
Songs should have endings and not flow into the next song

Which is more important?
That the album works as a whole
That each song can stand alone

And finally a few questions about you

Do you play an instrument at a level at which you could entertain with it?:
Yes, guitar
Yes, keyboard/piano
Yes, other instrument
No

Are you currently in a band?:
Yes
No, but I have been in the past
No

Knowledge of music theory?:

Limited to none
Moderate
Advanced

And that's it. Thanks again for your time.

Guitars or Keyboards?:

I'd like to say that in the mood question, had there not been sad or depressing, I probably would have picked "Dark" as the mood. I don't like depressing music, but I definetely like most of my music to be overly dark.

(normally I would say "as long as the good music lasts", but this time I'll chose a legal option Tongue)

Concept Album?:
Full concept album (plot, characters, etc.)
Slightly conceptual (songs have common themes, but not in story form)
No concept (songs have no intentional connecting theme)

(though it totally depends on the album. Still, I find the concept albums to be the most enjoyable)

Motifs:
There should be melodies/lyrics shared across songs
Songs should be unique and not reference each other

(if not overdone, this increases the coherence of an album)

Mood of the music:
Happy, upbeat, humorous
Sad, dark, depressing
A mix of positive and negative moods

(totally depends on my mood)

Average Song Length:
3-5 minutes
5-7 minutes

Structure of individual songs:
Verse-chorus-verse structure
Largely verse-chorus-verse, but with occasional deviations
Largely unstructured, but with repeating sections or melodies throughout
Little to no structure or repetition

(though longer songs do much better with the third option)

40-50 minutes Make it 60-70 if it's DT, 20 if it's Sigur Ros.
50-60 minutes
60-70 minutes
70-80 minutes

Concept Album?:
Full concept album (plot, characters, etc.)
Slightly conceptual (songs have common themes, but not in story form) I like them all but sometime concept albums are too nonsensical and no-concept albums too erratic.
No concept (songs have no intentional connecting theme)

Motifs:
There should be melodies/lyrics shared across songs
Songs should be unique and not reference each other              Both work for me.

Mood of the music:
Happy, upbeat, humorous
Sad, dark, depressing
A mix of positive and negative moods   i can't take a whole "happy album" and if it had to be one extreme, I'd rather take the sad one.

Average Song Length:
3-5 minutes  YES, I SAID IT. Give me fantastic "Can utility and the Coast-liners" over 20-minute nonsense every day. But there are many, many GREAT long songs.
5-7 minutes
7-10 minutes   My second choice.
10+ minutes

Should there be a 15+ minute song?
Yes
No          I mean, if it's good i want it. If it's just for the sake of addding an elephant to an album, then no.

Lyrics:
None (Instrumental music and/or wordless vocalizations such as humming)
Lyrical singing, but also some purely instrumental songs       Give me 95% with lyrics, and ONE instrumental. For instrumental music I prefer other genres like classical.
All songs should have lyrics

Guitars or Keyboards?:
No keys
Keys, but guitar dominated
Even split between keys and guitars    Anything really.
Guitar, but keyboard dominated
No guitars

Sound:
Minimalistic, not too many instruments at once, sparse instrumentation
Dense, dissonant, many different instruments playing different, often clashing, parts at once
A happy medium between the two

Structure of individual songs:
Verse-chorus-verse structure
Largely verse-chorus-verse, but with occasional deviations
Largely unstructured, but with repeating sections or melodies throughout

Little to no structure or repetition

Live or CD?:
The spontaneity and atmosphere (rawness) of a live concert
The perfection and studio tricks of the studio recording   In this case is 110% absolute.

Structure of album:
All songs should lead directly into the next
Some songs can, but not good if the whole album is connected
Songs should have endings and not flow into the next song

Which is more important?
That the album works as a whole
That each song can stand alone

And finally a few questions about you

Do you play an instrument at a level at which you could entertain with it?:
Yes, guitar
Yes, keyboard/piano
Yes, other instrument   Drums, self-taught. Good for rock, metal and related.
 No

Are you currently in a band?:
Yes
No, but I have been in the past
No

Knowledge of music theory?:

Limited to none    Much more than the average Joe, much less than the average Joe the Musician.
Moderate
Advanced

And that's it. Thanks again for your time.

Thanks for the opportunity!  Basically, a lot of Gabriel-era Genesis, 1970s Yes and Fish-era Marillion was going through my brain as I answered your survey...

40-50 minutes
50-60 minutes
60-70 minutes
70-80 minutes

Concept Album?:
Full concept album (plot, characters, etc.)
Slightly conceptual (songs have common themes, but not in story form)
No concept (songs have no intentional connecting theme)

Motifs:
There should be melodies/lyrics shared across songs
Songs should be unique and not reference each other

Mood of the music:
Happy, upbeat, humorous
Sad, dark, depressing
A mix of positive and negative moods

Average Song Length:
3-5 minutes
5-7 minutes
7-10 minutes
10+ minutes

Should there be a 15+ minute song?
Yes
No

Lyrics:
None (Instrumental music and/or wordless vocalizations such as humming)
Lyrical singing, but also some purely instrumental songs
All songs should have lyrics

Guitars or Keyboards?:
No keys
Keys, but guitar dominated
Even split between keys and guitars
Guitar, but keyboard dominated
No guitars

Sound:
Minimalistic, not too many instruments at once, sparse instrumentation
Dense, dissonant, many different instruments playing different, often clashing, parts at once
A happy medium between the two

Structure of individual songs:
Verse-chorus-verse structure
Largely verse-chorus-verse, but with occasional deviations
Largely unstructured, but with repeating sections or melodies throughout
Little to no structure or repetition

Live or CD?:
The spontaneity and atmosphere (rawness) of a live concert
The perfection and studio tricks of the studio recording

Structure of album:
All songs should lead directly into the next
Some songs can, but not good if the whole album is connected
Songs should have endings and not flow into the next song

Which is more important?
That the album works as a whole
That each song can stand alone

And finally a few questions about you

Do you play an instrument at a level at which you could entertain with it?:
Yes, guitar
Yes, keyboard/piano
Yes, other instrument (alto sax)

Keys, but guitar dominated (even as a keyboardist, I think guitar-driven is the way to go...)
Even split between keys and guitars
Guitar, but keyboard dominated
No guitars

Sound:
Minimalistic, not too many instruments at once, sparse instrumentation
Dense, dissonant, many different instruments playing different, often clashing, parts at once
A happy medium between the two (beauty is amplified when both are present)

Structure of individual songs:
Verse-chorus-verse structure
Largely verse-chorus-verse, but with occasional deviations
Largely unstructured, but with repeating sections or melodies throughout
Little to no structure or repetition

Live or CD?:
The spontaneity and atmosphere (rawness) of a live concert
The perfection and studio tricks of the studio recording (this is really more of a sound clarity issue than anything)

Structure of album:
All songs should lead directly into the next
Some songs can, but not good if the whole album is connected
Songs should have endings and not flow into the next song

Which is more important?
That the album works as a whole
That each song can stand alone
Is there a middle ground here?

And finally a few questions about you

Do you play an instrument at a level at which you could entertain with it?:
Yes, guitar
Yes, keyboard/piano, guitar, sax, drums.
Yes, other instrument
No

Are you currently in a band?:
 Yes - A New Creation
No, but I have been in the past
No

Knowledge of music theory?:

Limited to none
Moderate
Advanced

Under 40 minutes
40-50 minutes
50-60 minutes

70-80 minutes

Concept Album?:
Full concept album (plot, characters, etc.)
Slightly conceptual (songs have common themes, but not in story form)
No concept (songs have no intentional connecting theme)

Motifs:
There should be melodies/lyrics shared across songs
Songs should be unique and not reference each other

Mood of the music:
Happy, upbeat, humorous
Sad, dark, depressing
A mix of positive and negative moods

Average Song Length:
3-5 minutes
5-7 minutes
7-10 minutes
10+ minutes
I really do not mind, any length if it's good

Should there be a 15+ minute song?
Yes
No
Only if it's appropriate and required........... only if the musicians are able to pull it off well!

Lyrics:
None (Instrumental music and/or wordless vocalizations such as humming)
Lyrical singing, but also some purely instrumental songs
All songs should have lyrics

Guitars or Keyboards?:
No keys
Keys, but guitar dominated
Even split between keys and guitars - Again, it's whatever the song requires
Guitar, but keyboard dominated
No guitars

Sound:
Minimalistic, not too many instruments at once, sparse instrumentation
Dense, dissonant, many different instruments playing different, often clashing, parts at once
A happy medium between the two
None of the above?

Structure of individual songs:
Verse-chorus-verse structure
Largely verse-chorus-verse, but with occasional deviations
Largely unstructured, but with repeating sections or melodies throughout
Little to no structure or repetition
I don't mind, whatever is required, and works

Live or CD?:
The spontaneity and atmosphere (rawness) of a live concert
The perfection and studio tricks of the studio recording
BOTH!

Structure of album:
All songs should lead directly into the next
Some songs can, but not good if the whole album is connected

For all of the questions before the "questions about you", honestly, I love some albums that are 42 minutes long, with no theme, just as much as 70-minute concept albums...and many that share those same formats that I dislike as well - so my answer to each of those questions would honestly be: Whichever answer means that the music is really good, which can be different depending on the artist and their goal of that album. I enjoy Neal Morse's epics much more than his short songs, but I love King Crimson's shorter songs much more than their longer pieces. Yes's Drama is a great short album with no epics, yet I like Spock's Beard's 2-disk concept album Snow just as much.

As for the rest:

Do you play an instrument at a level at which you could entertain with it?:
Yes, guitar
Yes, keyboard/piano
Yes, other instrument
No

Are you currently in a band?:
Yes
No, but I have been in the past

I just needed a place where I could survey a bunch of prog fans, and this seemed to be the best place to do it. For this survey, I want you to imagine your perfect album. This doesn't have to be a real album or even necessarily a prog album. Just imagine what the ideal album would be in your mind, and then answer some questions related to it. The questions are multiple choice, but feel free to elaborate if you so desire. Be honest, for my benefit. There are no right or wrong answers. I love surveys!

Album lenght:
40-50 minutes

Concept album?
Slightly conceptual

Motifs:
Regarding the referencing/no referencing issue, I like a bit of referencing, such as a melody briefly appearing agains somewhere (but just for a very short bit) or the title of another song or album by a band appearing as part of the lyrics in some other song (Aerosmith (of all bands...) did this quite often during the 70s and 80s and I think it's kind of cool). Referencing all the time is, however, tiring, and doesn't always work well.

Mood of the music:
A mix of positive and negative moods

Average Song Length:
Custom option: 5-10 minutes

Should there be a 15+ minute song?
Yes.

Lyrics:
Lyrical singing, but also some purely instrumental songs

Guitars or Keyboards?:
Even split between keys and guitars

Comment: Some songs could be keyboard-driven, while others could be guitar-driven, and some could be completely equal.

Sound:
A happy medium between the two

Comment: Of course the type of sound should be carefully chosen to match the tone and subject of the lyrics as well as possible. Also, songs could (and should, if appropriate) include both melodic parts with just one or two instruments playing and more dissonant, "crowded" parts.

Structure of individual songs:
Largely unstructured, but with repeating sections or melodies throughout

Live or CD?:
Custom option: Studio, but without excessive trickery. A stripped down, natural sound. Well recorded, but without a slick, modern production.

Structure of album:
Some songs can, but not good if the whole album is connected

Which is more important?
That the album works as a whole

Do you play an instrument at a level at which you could entertain with it?:
Yes, bass guitar and electric guitar.

Are you currently in a band?:
No, but I have been in the past

Knowledge of music theory?:
Limited

Still, it's easy, although I gave some wrong information:

1. Drag your mouse over the text
2. Press CTRL and  C at the same time.
3. Go to the message box at the bottom of the page, where you usually type your comment
4. Press CTRL and  V at the same time.

Then you're ready to edit the text.

Considering your ideal album:

Album Length:

50-60 minutes - I don't mind any length as long as it's consistently good. Most consistently good albums I know average around 50... so I'll go with this.

Concept Album?:
No concept (songs have no intentional connecting theme) - I really have no preference here, it's different for every album. So I'll go with the one that prevails on my top 10

Motifs:
Songs should be unique and not reference each other - i like variety... something like Disco VolanteTongueWink
Big smile
Mood of the music:
Sad, dark, depressing -as a goth I hate life and truly hate the sun

Average Song Length:
5-7 minutes - again no preference but whatever

Should there be a 15+ minute song? if the band can make one that's good. since its a perfect album, I assume they can. so yes.

Lyrics:
Lyrical singing, but also some purely instrumental songs - this works just fine

Guitars or Keyboards?:

Keys, but guitar dominated - thats how i generally like it

Sound:
A happy medium between the two - yay

Structure of individual songs:
Little to no structure or repetition - obvious choice

Live or CD?:
The perfection and studio tricks of the studio recording - and o donce its done i'll take a live version too.. but it has to be done in studio first

Structure of album - doesn't matter BUT: all songs must have an ending or a transition into the next one, NO FADEOUTS! I f**kING HATE FADEOUTSAngry

Which is more important?
That the album works as a whole, BUT not to the extent that NONE of the songs can stand on their ownWink

And finally a few questions about you

Do you play an instrument at a level at which you could entertain with it?:

No i suck at life

Are you currently in a band?:
i wish

Knowledge of music theory?:

Limited to none... yeah....

sorry if i didn't make sense, im really stoned right now.

OK here I go It's 4 AM and I've Got Hawkwind's Space Ritual blasting on the headphones.

Ideal Album :

Album length: As long as possible

Concept album ? : No concept but if there is one stick to it. What's Kings Of Speed doing on Hawkwind's Warrior On The Edge Of Time ? Then they put Motorhead on the CD ???????

Motifs : Mix it all up. I like what Gentle Giant did on their early stuff mixing baroque, medieval then a blistering electric guitar solo. Gnidrolog's first album too. I like suprises. Go ahead, confuse the hell out of me. Make my day.

Mood Of The Music : Take me on a roller coaster ride. Heavy to melancholic. Omega did that a lot in the seventies.

Average Song Length : As long as it takes but 10 minutes is my average attention span.

15 minute plus song? : If you're going to do this make it good. Not directionless jamming.

Lyrics : More focus on instrumental ability. Many prog bands have awful vocalists and corny lyrics.

Guitars Or Keyboards? : Both. Some bands such as Triumvirat, ELP or Trace that are heavy on the keyboards tend to wear out their welcome. There's only so much keyboard freaking out I can handle. If there's going to be incessant freaking out do it on the guitar. No 20 minute drum solos, please. bands like Focus have a great guitar/keyboard balance.

Sound : Spread it out. Be dynamic. Build it. Rise and fall along the way.

Structure Of Individual Songs : Verse/chorus/verse tends to bore me. I prefer unpredictability. If a main theme is stated suprise me when it's reinserted or restated. If it's going to be ustructured I expect total unmitigated mayhem. Guru Guru UFO. There's mayhem!

Live Or CD : What's a CD? Vinyl rules man! Some prog band's are better live such as Grobschnitt. Why play it the same way live? Might as well stay home. Rush are annoying live. But some guys want that so they can say " their musical geniuses man. They played it just like on the album man." On the other hand, when I hear a brilliant studio track I always say to myself, " Gotta hear how they're going to pull this one off live." I hate it when bands use sequencers live with the exception of electronic artists such as Klaus Schulze, Tangerine Dream, Jean -Michel Jarre etc.

Structure Of The Album : Fade outs are cop outs. But when it works I like cross fading. Don't put tracks that sound like they're from different planets back to back. I don't know which genius thought of putting Le Clochard after Hocus Pocus on Focus' Moving Waves Wacko Hocus Pocus should have been at the end.

Which Is More Important ? Songs Alone/Album As A Whole : I hate buying a freaking album for one song.

Do I Play ? : I fake it on drums, guitar and sound like an idiot on keyboards.

Currently In A Band ?: I was in a few bands when I was younger during the time when unicorns roamed the Earth. Played heavy metal as well as some jazz.

Knowledge Of Theory : I can read music but I'm no genius.

That it ? Did I get the job?

You enjoy music when the musical themes are spread across songs? That's a positive sign of schizophrenia, we must research this futher.

Considering my ideal album:

Album Length:

60-70 minutes

Concept Album?:
Slightly conceptual (I'm assuming you mean a theme album, which I like the most, because often times straightforward 'rock operas' can be a bit overbearing and distracting and quite frankly, very cheesy. I've only seen a storyline work a handful of times on rock albums (''The Wall'' being the crown jewel, of course).

Motifs:
There should be melodies/lyrics shared across songs (Theme albums that share common threads between the tracks are very intruiging to me and helps the whole thing feel like one cohesive whole. Very important in my opinion)

Mood of the music:

A mix of positive and negative moods (Life isn't all good or bad, so the art that reflects it most should be conveyed in the same way)

Average Song Length:

5-7 minutes (For the most part, but a couple of 'epics' on the record are always nice if they're done right.)

Should there be a 15+ minute song?

No (Unless it can hold my interest.)

Lyrics:

Lyrical singing, but also some purely instrumental songs

Guitars or Keyboards?:

Even split between keys and guitars

Sound:

A happy medium between the two (Over-technicality gets on my nerves after awhile, but then again, basic beats can be just as repetetive, so a good even blend is my idea of a great album)

Structure of individual songs:

Largely unstructured, but with repeating sections or melodies throughout (Recopitulation is something bands like Yes and Pink Floyd pulled olff with great strides. I'd love to see it make a comeback in more modern music)

Live or CD?:

The perfection and studio tricks of the studio recording (I'v e always considered the final product to be like any work of art, and as such the artist must take the time needed to make it as perfect in his eyes as possible. Playing everything one time straight through without proper mixing and experimentation can potentially hurt the final product on a creative level. Live albums are their own thing, but my ideal idea of a great record will always be a studio production.)

Structure of album:

Some songs can, but not good if the whole album is connected (Wish you hadn't made this multiple choice. It limits my response. Really, It depends on the album. Since this can potentially be an imaginary one, I guess an even balance between the two feels right to me, but I'm not saying that it "isn't good" for an album to feature an all-segued tracklist.)

Which is more important?
That each song can stand alone (Surely, no self-respecting artist would put any thbrow-away tracks on the album, nomatter what the borader picture is meant to look like. Each individual song should speak to the musician in a positive way, otherwise it shouldn't be released to the public.)

And finally a few questions about you

Do you play an instrument at a level at which you could entertain with it?:
Yes, guitar (rhythm playing, mostly, so accompaniement would woprk best for the best results, but I could certainly 'entertain' someone whith the knowledge I already have of my instrument. How well I could entertain them is a different story altogether.)

Are you currently in a band?:

No (But I want to be so badly!!!)

Knowledge of music theory?:

Limited to none

Album Length:
40-50 minutes
There are lots of exceptions, though, like The Lamb and Godbluff.

Concept Album?:
Doesn’t matter. But if it’s a concept album, the concept should better be good!

Motifs:
There should be melodies/lyrics shared across songs
Well, I like that, but it’s not necessary.

Mood of the music:
A mix of positive and negative moods

Average Song Length:
5-7 minutes
or
7-10 minutes

But I have no objections to shorter or longer songs as long as they are good.

Should there be a 15+ minute song?
Again, only if it’s good and manages to keep my interest all the way.

Lyrics:
Lyrical singing, but also some purely instrumental songs

Guitars or Keyboards?:
Even split between keys and guitars
Or keys and saxophone or violin or whatever.

Sound:
A happy medium between the two

Structure of individual songs:
Verse-chorus-verse structure
Largely verse-chorus-verse, but with occasional deviations
Largely unstructured, but with repeating sections or melodies throughout
Little to no structure or repetition

Can’t answer here. A short song may well be strophic, but a strophic epic is a catastrophic epic. Besides, there are many ways of making structure without the use of repetition.

Live or CD?:
The perfection and studio tricks of the studio recording

Structure of album:
Some songs can, but not good if the whole album is connected

Which is more important?
That the album works as a whole
That each song can stand alone

I can’t choose. Both would be perfect.

And finally a few questions about you

Do you play an instrument at a level at which you could entertain with it?:
Yes, guitar

Are you currently in a band?:
No, but I have been in the past
I’m working on a studio project that will involve several other musicians, but I wouldn’t really call it a band.

Knowledge of music theory?:
Advanced
